Buying Guide - The Best Dive Watches of 2021 by MONOCHROME
Dive watches are among the most popular models available on the market. Virtually all brands, with only rare exceptions, have embraced the concept and now propose an alternative to the classics that are the Submariner or the Seamaster. There’s a good reason behind this popularity, as dive watches, even though not used for the initial purpose, are perfect for weekends or holidays, and are no-brainer choices when it comes to a robust sports watch. This year certainly wasn’t the most prolific in this field, yet we’ve some pretty cool introductions. As part of the “best of 2021” series and following our buying guide on the best chronographs of 2021, here’s our selection of our favourite dive watches launched this year.Editor's note: this list reflects the preferences of MONOCHROME's editorial team and results from an internal vote. This list is, of course, non-exhaustive and remains subjective. If there are other dive watches launched in 2021 that made a
The New Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Dual Time
First presented in 2017, the Marine Torpilleur collection has been entirely refreshed last year, with new and refined models that pay tribute to the rich history of the brand in the field of Marine Chronometers. The Marine Torpilleur picks up on vintage design cues but comes in a lighter, younger and more versatile package like the fast, manoeuvrable torpedo boats that inspired its name. Elegant, discreet and highly distinctive, there’s a lot to love in these watches, mechanically and visually. For the 2022 collection, Ulysse Nardin expands its Marine Torpilleur collection with three new models, all part of the permanent collection, including the brand new Dual Time watch.?The Ulysse Nardin Marine TorpilleurFounded in 1846 in Le Locle by Ulysse Nardin, the young clockmaker consolidated his reputation with precision marine chronometers. By the 1870s, the manufacture supplied more than 50 navies and merchant marine companies with precision marine deck chronometers. This specific ye
Hands-On With The Official Rubber Straps For The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80
In just a couple of years, it seems Tissot has stepped up its game immensely, by introducing new and very handsome collections across the board. The brand has always been a strong performer in the more accessible market, but today the value for money in its watches often seems off the charts. Just think of watches like the Gentlemen, the new Le Locle or the Telemeter 1938. And of course, everybody’s favourite, the PRX collection! They all look very good, have a more than decent level of finishing and use impressive mechanical movements. And best of all, the prices have remained sensible! What’s not to like? Zooming in on the PRX, the lack of strap versatility perhaps? Well, that’s about to change as Tissot now brings rubber straps to the PRX Powermatic 80 party! It has been a long time coming, relatively speaking, but Tissot is finally giving the people what it wants; more versatility. While the PRX has been a huge success for the brand, up until recently it was only a
Ochs und Junior Due Ore reviewed - Monochrome Watches
Ochs und Junior is the brain-child of Ludwig Oechslin and Beat Weinman and recently Ulysse Nardin came on board as the third partner. A logical third partner, if you know more about Oechslin’s achievements in the horological world. Since 2009 his ideas take shape in Ochs und Junior timepieces.?Ochs und Junior watches are recognizable by their clean and almost industrial design, lacking any kind of typical watchmaking finishing. And lacking any name or logo! The minimalistic design and raw, unfinished, machined parts determine the looks of all Ochs und Junior timepieces. Luckily I was allowed to borrow a Due Ore for a review.?It's a tough job, but somebody's gotto do it Ad - Scroll to continue with article HistoryI wanted to say that the story began with Ochs und Junior’s first timepiece, the Anno Cinquanta, however that wouldn’t be correct. It
Introducing: The New Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar
Vacheron Constantin celebrates its grand 270th anniversary this year. For a brand with such an illustrious and storied past, an anniversary of this calibre means rolling out the big guns. To commemorate the date, Vacheron Constantin unveils a new high-end manufacture calibre combining a tourbillon and a perpetual calendar. Limited to 127 pieces and presented in a platinum Traditionnelle case, the complexity of VC's first automatic tourbillon perpetual calendar calibre is complemented by a refined hand-guilloche dial and other special 270th-anniversary signatures.?The model selected to pay tribute to VC's longstanding haute horlogerie tradition, dating from 1755, is the Traditionnelle, the brand's repository of timeless, traditional models. With a diameter of 42mm, the platinum case of the new Traditionnelle has a thickness of 11.1mm, which is impressive given the complications inside. While this is the first automatic-driven tourbillon and perpetual calendar watch, the Maison had previ
