The Collector's Corner - The IWC Mark XII Pilot's Watch
Our last subject on The Collector's Corner was the Cartier Tank Americaine, and though we're sticking to the theme of the classic time-only watch for a little bit longer, this week we'll look at one with a very different flavour. The inaugural article in The Collector's Corner was about the IWC Doppelchronograph reference 3711. In 1993, one year after that reference was released, IWC followed up with a classic time-and-date-only pilot's watch that stuck to the utilitarian design of the military watch Mark XI, yet added some refinements to make it a more compelling product for the civilian population. That's right. We're talking about the Mark XII, the first in a long line of civilian pilot's watches in IWC's Mark collection. No other model line has stayed as true to its inspiration and is as instantly recognizable as an IWC as the classic Mark. And, it especially makes sense to talk about the Mark XII now, since IWC has released the latest generation of the collection, the Pilot's Watc
Weekly Watch Photo - Voutilainen Observatoire - Monochrome Watches
When it comes to classic and extremely desirable timepieces, Kari Voutilainen’s Observatoire is on the short list of many collectors. In today’s Weekly Watch Photo we show you an Observatoire and tell more about its (base) movement, the competition chronometer Peseux 260. The stunning photos are from Gary, the proud owner of this magnificent beauty.?Before we turn to the chronometry competitions and the Peseux caliber 260, let’s have a closer look at the dial. It’s a perfect example of a hand guilloche (engine turned) dial as can be found on all Voutilainen timepieces.?Some of the few remaining Rose engine turning machines (click here for Wikipedia)?that can be used for dials, can be found in Voutilainen’s atelier. Dials adorned by engine turning (or hand guilloche) are a rare commodity now-a-days, as the Rose engine turning machines and the skills required to use these machines properly are both becoming extremely rare. Lucky for those in the position to
Cartier and Chaykin and Two Mystery Watches - Monochrome Watches
When two celebrities step-out onto the same red-carpet wearing the same dress it can create an awkward and sometimes ugly scene. Then the folks in the blogosphere star asking Who wore it better? or Who Rocked' a certain look. What happens when two names synonymous with uber-Horology produce uncannily similar designs? Let's find outWhen you spend all day trawling through different online watch forums you pick-up a lot of banter about derivative designs'. Most times what people are talking about are what you would more generally call a knock-off. Strings of posts ensue. These shoving matches descend into a version of car is faster than your car and then I click on to newer and hopefully more enlightening posts! Let's be honest for a moment: not every round / square / rectangular / octagonal / polygonal watch is a knock-off' of the all the watches of the same shape that came before it. Sometimes watchmakers use the shapes that we are all familiar with to try to twist the imagination into
IWC Portugieser Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph IW394005 Review
During the 2020 online edition of Watches & Wonders, IWC unveiled this complicated Portugieser flying tourbillon, retrograde date and flyback chronograph model. Marking the top-end releases in the new Portugieser collection, along with an equally impressive Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon, the tourbillon chronograph watch was presented in precious metal cases of gold or platinum. If you think this combination of complications already existed, you'd be right since they made their debut in the IWC Da Vinci Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph of 2017 and later that year in the one-off Portugieser Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph for Laureus Charity Night 2017. The gold model with blue dial ref. IW394005, which is also a Boutique Edition, was our candidate for today's hands-on session. Boutique editions refer to IWC models that combine gold cases and blue dials, very fitting given the maritime theme of the Portugieser.Portugieser lineageThe Portugieser is one of IWC's oldest a
Buying Guide - Our Top 10 Accessible Watches of 2020
MONOCHROME has always been, since its inception in 2006, a celebration of fine watches. And by that, we mean mechanical watches in general, from high-end brands to creative independent watchmaking or icons of the industry. While we can dream in front of a superb Lange Tourbograph Perpetual or some of the most complex watches of 2020, we also need to face reality and admit that these are made for the very few. So, in addition to our lists of the best chronographs, dive watches and luxury sports watches of the year, we also wanted to take a look back at watches that we can actually afford and collect, accessible watches launched in 2020 that still satisfy our love for beautiful horology. And if you want to treat yourself for Christmas, all of these watches are available online, from the brands’ official websites…?Note: this buying guide is based on our preferences. Also, we’ve only listed mechanical watches, priced below EUR 2,000, and only models that we had the opport
