5 Mechanical Marvels from Baselworld 2018 - Monochrome Watches
On the contrary to?most of the other buying guides we’ve published, the present one is more of a “wish list” or a “dream list” rather than a proper guide – so consider it a guide for those who already have everything they need but want to be genuinely surprised. Nothing here is rational, it’s all about passion, ingenuity, creativity and impressive mechanics. From the thinnest automatic watch ever created to a signing automaton or an atomic?sympathique?clock, here are the five most marvellous mechanical creations we’ve seen at Baselworld 2018.Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon AutomaticLet’s start straight away with one of the hottest brands of the moment: Bvlgari. Yes, the Italian Maison is a proper watchmaking expert and as a demonstration of this savoir-faire, it has created several record-breaking ultra-thin watches – the thinnest tourbillon, the thinnest minute repeater and here is the new thinnest automatic watch AND thinn

Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Spider - Hands-On Review, Price
Nivada Grenchen is one of those hidden gems of the vintage watch scene, a brand with great history and fascinating models, such as the famous Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver or the Depthmaster. Dormant for several decades, the brand has recently been revived by French entrepreneur Guillaume Laidet, who in 2019 obtained the license to use the Nivada Grenchen copyright. Following this, Laidet started to reissue some of the brand’s most glorious past models, which also included the brand’s first waterproof automatic watch, the Antarctic. Having a thing for original, daring designs, he wasn’t shy about reproducing the ultra-cool “Pacman” dials and today it’s yet another bold and unique look that is back on stage, with the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Spider Re-Edition.Nivada was founded in Grenchen (Granges), Switzerland in 1926 by Otto Wullimann, Hermann Schindler and Jack Schneider. The company remained under the control of the Schneider family until its 5
Watches and Formula 1 - Episode 7 - Williams F1 and Oris - Monochrome Watches
40 years, for some this feels like an eternity (I am only 33 years old) and for others it feels like next to nothing. Making it 40 years in life doesn't require too much effort if you have no serious challenges. But to make it 40 years in the grueling sport of Formula 1 takes skill, determination, luck, good judgment, a lot of money and a clear vision. One of the most illustrious names in the business is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, so it is only fitting to include it into our Watches & Formula 1 saga; Williams F1 and their long-term watch partner, Oris.Founded by Sir Frank Williams and Sir Patrick Head, the team started in an old carpet warehouse in Didcot, Oxfordshire (UK) in 1977. Prior to that Sir Frank Williams was pushing drivers in F2 and F3000 series, and he subsequently started venturing into F1 in 1969. Fielding a Brabham BT26A with the iconic Ford DFV 3.0 V8 and long-time friend Piers Courage behind the wheel, they scored two second place finishes! A year
Introducing The Frederique Constant Classics Tourbillon Manufacture In Steel
It is not a secret anymore that Frederique Constant has built its success around accessible luxury watches. The idea has long been to provide complications and in-house movements (at least within the Manufacture collection) at almost unprecedented price levels. Remember the brand’s take on the perpetual calendar? Less than 8k euros at launch time. Same with the Highlife Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar, priced below 23k euros. Earlier this year, FC presented a new, streamlined tourbillon watch, the Classics Tourbillon Manufacture, with an in-house automatic movement housed in a gold case (and yes, that was also fairly priced). It now returns in two new stainless steel editions, and once again price is somewhat making a statement.?With only a few exceptions to the rule (and I won’t mention China-made tourbillons here) such as TAG Heuer and recently Horage and?CODE41?(both newcomers with the idea to make a name for themselves), watches featuring a tourbillon are expensive.
