Recap: The Best GMT and Travel Watches of 2023
Yesterday, we started looking back at 2023 and all the new watches we’ve seen to try and make a list of the best ones. The MONOCHROME Editorial Team took votes to determine the Best Chronograph of 2023, which kicked things off, but also many other categories. Up next is the GMT/Travel category, and although the list wasn’t as long as the chronographs category, there was a lot of debate on which ones would make the cut. Going through the list reveals that there are plenty of directions to go in, but the diving travel watch is gaining traction. So, without revealing too much up front, here are the MONOCHROME team’s Best GMT/Travel Watches of 2023.Going through all watch novelties for 2023, we ended up with a little over 70 watches under the GMT/Travel tag. The list?before voting saw some usual suspects making the rounds, but some new brands, like Jacob & Co with its The World Is Yours dual time watch, also entered the mix. Nevertheless, we narrowed it down to the fi
Girard-Perregaux Constant Escapement L.M. Wins The "Aiguille d'Or" At The Grand Prix dHorlogerie De Geneve - Monochrome Watches
Last Friday, Girard-Perregaux’s Constant Escapement L.M. was awarded with the “Aiguille d’Or” at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG). The most coveted distinction in the watch industry for an idea that arose during a train ride, while playing with a train ticket. Last year, when we first heard about this new escapement, and broke the story to a large audience, we were already convinced of the potential of this new kind of escapement. Today we’d like to congratulate Girard-Perregaux and the inventor Nicolas Dehon. There can only be one to win the Aiguille d’Or (or Golden Hand in English), however there are quite a few sub categories and we’ll list all winners for you. Like last years, there’s a large percentage of independent watchmakers, taking home one of the prices. And while last year’s Special Jury Prize went to Vianney Halter, this year he is awarded with the Innovation Prize for his new watch, the Deep Space Tour
Milus Archimedes 1970s Reissue Super Compressor // Hands-On, Price
As the trend for vintage-inspired watches consolidates, brands continue to dig into their archives to find inspiration and breathe new life into past models. Milus, a brand with over 100 years of history and recently revived has some rich background in field watches and divers’ instruments. Following the Snow Star, the brand also reissues one of its most famous models, the 1970s Super Compressor dive watch, with the new and objectively cool Archimedes by Milus.Historical BackgroundThe name Archimedes naturally refers to the ancient Greek mathematician, physicist and inventor, Archimedes of Syracuse, often considered the greatest mathematician of antiquity and famous for the Archimedes’ principle (the forces exerted on a body immersed in a fluid). The original 1970s Milus Super Compressor watch, with Ervin Piquerez SA case, that served as the inspiration for the modern version presented today. This name has been used by Milus to label dive watches since the 1960s, in particula
Introducing: The Swatch x Blancpain Scuba Fifty Fathoms Pink Ocean
Following a rather unmanageable success with the Moonswatch collaboration with Omega, Swatch did it again in 2023 with yet another brand from the group – this time Blancpain – and with another emblematic watch – the Fifty Fathoms. The result, an accessible Bioceramic watch inspired by Blancpain’s famous dive watch, came with an automatic movement this time – which certainly made it more appropriate for us at MONOCHROME. Following the first 5 editions and an appealing all-black model, it’s now the total opposite that Swatch drops; a pink-to-the-max version, the new Swatch x Blancpain Scuba Fifty Fathoms Pink Ocean.Following the inaugural collection of 2023, the Swatch x Blancpain Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms was presented in two other editions. There was first the all-black Ocean Of Storms in January 2024. Recently, the brand also released a turquoise edition named Blue Lagoon – which surprisingly didn’t gather much attention. But wait u
Antiquorum - Monochrome Watches
On october 16th the next Antiquorum watch auction will be helt in New York. The antiquorum auctions are very interesting for any watch enthousiast, for several reasons. First of all the number of watches being auctioned are enormous and the number of interesting, amazing or stunning watches are almost equally enormous! The online catalog shows everything up for sale, including very good descriptions and photos of the watches. There are 330 wristwatches up for sale and 74 other timekeepers like pocket watches, clocks and travel (alarm)clocks. Especially some rare and vintage sportswatches steal the show i think, but there are also plenty of reasonably priced modern watches that are well worth a look.Maybe this is not my favorite watch of the auction but with an estimate selling price of between 500 and 1,000 USD this Mont Blanc Timewalker chronograph might turn out to be a bargain.
