Collector's Corner - Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronographe Retrograde
In our previous episode of the Collector's Corner, we took a look at the Chopard L.U.C 16/1860 and its siblings that are part of the micro-rotor Calibre 96 family. From the realm of time-only, we move to complications again. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2021 with the stunning Nonantieme, a celebration of the spirit of the Reverso and the possibilities afforded by a swivelling case. This article travels 30 years back to the early 1990s, to a landmark project that saw Jaeger-LeCoultre?relearn Haute Horlogerie as the company developed six limited-edition watches in rose gold, each with a different complication, in the span of ten years. And, since we love our chronographs at MONOCHROME, we're going to look at a particular watch in this special series, namely the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronographe Retrograde.A Brief History of the Jaeger-LeCoultre ReversoWe took our first look at the post-quartz crisis years at Jaeger-LeCoultre in our earlier The Colle
Interview - Florent Lecomte, teacher and independent watchmaker
Throughout my years of working for MONOCHROME watches, I have seen architects, computer engineers, pharmacists and many others make a switch into watchmaking. People do this for varying reasons but one thing that always seems to be the case is sheer unbridled passion. Passion for traditional craftsmanship, passion for creating something out of nothing. This leads to the occasional discovery of new and intriguing watchmakers, such as Florent Lecomte. An industrial product designer turned watchmaking teacher turned independent watchmaker. Time to ask Florent some questions, and introduce you to this future star!Robin Nooij, MONOCHROME - First off, could you briefly introduce yourself to our readers Florent? Hands-On: The Steel Zenith Pilot Big Date Flyback
During Watches & Wonders 2023, Zenith unveiled an entirely new Pilot collection that radically changed the flight path of this storied collection. As a brand with legitimate pilot watch credentials, dating to Louis Bleriot’s successful cross-Channel flight in a monoplane in 1909 with a ‘Special’ Zenith wristwatch strapped to his wrist, the brand’s decision to jettison the vintage personality that had defined the Montre d’Aeronef Type 20 collection since its reappearance in 2012 was daring. Comprised of a 40mm time-and-date and a larger 42.5mm Big Date Pilot Flyback, both available in matte black ceramic or steel, the look of the new collection is modern and, for many, welcomed as a breath of fresh air. Zenith is putting all its pilot eggs in one basket, confident that the contemporary looks and powerful El Primero movement will keep its new Pilot airborne. Let’s take a closer look at the Big Date Pilot Flyback in steel equipped with a new version
New Longines Spirit Bucherer BLUE Watches (Specs & Price)
In addition to being the world’s largest watch retailer, Bucherer is also known for its in-house collection of special edition watches, all focused around the brand’s signature colour, blue. Dubbed Bucherer BLUE, this now impressive collection gathers attractive models that are, in certain proportions, using blue to create unique versions of existing watches. Now, it is time for the winged hourglass to be part of the family, with the new (and rather modern) Longines Spirit Bucherer BLUE Watches, in time-only and chronograph versions. The recipe with the Bucherer BLUE collection is usually to have a rather large amount of blue on the dial, strap or even the case… but not always. This year’s take on the Longines Spirit collection is proving that Bucherer can be creative when it comes to make its own watches. And even though blue will be found on these watches, it isn’t the dominant colour. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
Announcing - We're expanding and Tom Mulraney and Matthew Catellier are joining MONOCHROME - Monochrome Watches
It is with great pleasure that we welcome two gentlemen?to the Monochrome team, who will be helping us out to cover what we at Monochrome feel are great watches. The Monochrome selection so to say. Tom is Monochrome’s “man in London” and will cover everything that’s important, horologically speaking, from the UK and London in particular, while Matthew will be handling our selection of value propositions and cool Kickstarter brands.Tom Mulraney joins as Monochrome's unofficial “man in London” and will be covering everything from boutique openings, events or?in-depth hands-on reviews.?I first met Tom via email many, many years ago when we were both starting out as aspiring watch bloggers. At that time I hadn't met too many watch nuts from Down Under but I am pleased to say our paths have crossed many times since over the years, most often during the madness that is Baselworld.
