Collector's Series - Malek's Schwarz Etienne Roma Synergy by Kari Voutilainen
Malek bin Easa is a regular contributor to MONOCHROME. Malek is the driving force and founder of the Emirates Watch Club and in that position a well-known figure in the Arab watch scene. This time we asked the Dubai-based collector about one of his most cherished timepieces, his Schwarz Etienne Roma Synergy by Kari Voutilainen. A model that has his personal touch! Because indeed, it's not just a classic Roma Synergy by Kari Voutilainen (if ever there was anything classic about this watch anyway) but it's the special edition made especially for the members of the Emirates Watch Club.?Let’s discover everything that makes this watch a true gem.?Dr Malek Easa, Founder of The Emirates Watch ClubFrank Geelen, MONOCHROME – When was the first time you laid eyes on Schwarz Etienne as a brand?Malek bin Easa, founder of the Emirates Watch Club – I can't remember exactly, but it was through browsing online a few years ago, maybe in 2016. The brand appealed to me because the compa
VIDEO - All You Need To Know About The OMEGA Co-Axial Escapement
Back in the mid-1990s, the watch industry was very different from what it is today and mechanical watchmaking was still in its renaissance. Very few watch brands actually manufactured movements in-house, and even fewer brands had the ability or industrial capacity to reimagine the escapement and the oscillator, together called the regulating organ and these are the most crucial part of a watch. With the idea of improving the century-old Swiss lever escapement (developed in 1755 by Thomas Mudge and used in 99.9% of all movements), master watchmaker George Daniels developed the Co-Axial escapement, an innovation that OMEGA realised was groundbreaking. Understanding the importance of chronometry, a field in which OMEGA has achieved multiple records, the Biel-based brand took on Daniels’ idea and industrialised the Co-Axial concept. It would become a key element in the impressive precision of its watches and paved the way for OMEGA’s Master Chronometer certification. Today, MON
2022 IWC Portugieser Blue Panda IW500715 and IW371620
The Portugieser family by IWC needs little to no introduction anymore, being one of the most acclaimed collections of the Schaffhausen-based brand. A nautical-inspired watch born in the 1930s following the request of two Portuguese merchants and sailing enthusiasts, it has become a classic that hardly changed over the years. Today, IWC introduces new versions of the Portugieser Automatic and the Portugieser Chronograph, two of the most popular models in the collection, which not only look rather appealing but also perfectly match the nautical background of this family of watches, with so-called “panda blue” dials. The combination of silvery-white dial and blue accents is amongst the most classic style you can find on an IWC Portugieser – if not the most emblematic combination. Adding a stronger nautical touch to these already nautical-related watches, this colour schema has a strong appeal and has been found on most of the members of the Portugieser family – the
Introducing the Ulysse Nardin Marine Diver Artemis Racing Limited Edition for the 35th Americas Cup - Monochrome-Watches
Ulysse Nardin, ostensibly a name synonymous with sailing, creates a limited edition Marine Diver to commemorate its partnership with Artemis racing. The previous America's Cup race had the growing pains of transitioning from the diminutive-by-comparison AC45 yachts to the staggering AC72 yachts (we featured the changes with Corum). The America's Cup 72 foot speed machine, which seems a misnomer to call a yacht, so we prefer a jet-aircraft-on-water, now comes standard with a solid carbon fiber sail, dual catamaran hull, and the finest in technological innovation. Oracle remains the team to beat, but as in life, competition calls for extraordinary effort, and Artemis, true to its name, returns to the hunt. Ulysse Nardin offers The Marine Diver Artemis Racing as a nautical instrument suitable for the herculean challenge of reaching sailing's most coveted trophy. The dive functionality of the watch is recognizable in its unidirectional bezel, which is notched with a wave edge for additional
