The 2016 Best-Of Reviews on Monochrome-Watches
Like we always say, Reviews are crucial for us, at Monochrome-Watches – and for two main reasons. First of all, in order to bring you the best possible stories and the most objective opinions, we need to?have some proper wrist-time with the watches. It’s no debate here: wearing the watch and experiencing it for a while, as if we were owning it, is?mandatory. It is our editorial philosophy. Second, as watch journalist, we believe that our reviews will influence your choices and for that reason, we think that you also need these reviews to make the most informed purchases. This is why, to close?2016, instead of showing you our most read stories, we’d like to show you the nine reviews you loved most this year on Monochrome-Watches (based on page-views and reactions).9 – A. Buying Guide: Some Of The Best Collaboration Watches Recently Launched
“Put two creative people in a room, and watch the magic happen.” While it might not exactly work like that, a joint project between two designers, artists or brands can lead to wonderful new things. It happens in art, it happens in fashion, and as you’ve guessed it, it happens in watchmaking. Over the years, the ‘collaboration game‘ has spawned some incredibly cool creations, often bringing two cultures together in one single watch. Even though it’s not a guaranteed recipe for success, these five recently introduced collaboration watches have a lot going for themselves!Zenith Defy Skyline Skeleton Night Surfer for time+tideThis Defy Skyline Skeleton Night Surfer is the second collaboration between Zenith and Australian watch publication Time+Tide. Milus Archimedes 1970s Reissue Super Compressor // Hands-On, Price
As the trend for vintage-inspired watches consolidates, brands continue to dig into their archives to find inspiration and breathe new life into past models. Milus, a brand with over 100 years of history and recently revived has some rich background in field watches and divers’ instruments. Following the Snow Star, the brand also reissues one of its most famous models, the 1970s Super Compressor dive watch, with the new and objectively cool Archimedes by Milus.Historical BackgroundThe name Archimedes naturally refers to the ancient Greek mathematician, physicist and inventor, Archimedes of Syracuse, often considered the greatest mathematician of antiquity and famous for the Archimedes’ principle (the forces exerted on a body immersed in a fluid). The original 1970s Milus Super Compressor watch, with Ervin Piquerez SA case, that served as the inspiration for the modern version presented today. This name has been used by Milus to label dive watches since the 1960s, in particula
The dreamy Cvstos Re-Belle Moon collection
Another relative newcomer on the independent watchmaking block is Cvstos, a niche Geneva-based brand founded in 2005 by Sassoun Sirmakes, son of Vartan Sirmakes of the Franck Muller Watchland Group. With a preference for tonneau-shaped cases across all its collections, it will not come as a surprise that co-founder and chief designer Antonio Terranova worked at Richard Mille long before his adventure at Cvstos. Like many watch brands, the core collections are based around land/Chronograph, sea/Sealiner and air/Jetliner, and a new Metropolitan luxury sports watch collection was launched earlier this year. Among the more extensive and diverse portfolio of watches is a smaller line-up known as Re-Belle, released in 2021. Still offering a robust 100m water-resistant case, the limited-edition models come with moon phase functions, mother-of-pearl or aventurine dials and a wide sway of gem-setting choices.Tonneau-Shaped CaseFeaturing the brand’s bold tonneau-shaped case, all Re-Belle M
Seiko Spring Drive Golden Tuna - SBDB008 - Monochrome Watches
This year at Basel, we saw something truly remarkable from the seminal Japanese brand, Seiko. A piece that we so boldly labeled to be an instant classic - the Grand Seiko 44GS reissue. 100 Years of watchmaking was the occasion, and with the Grand Seiko's success in international waters, it was only fitting for Seiko to put a GS as its symbol for yet another hallmark but is the Grand Seiko all there is to it? Monochrome investigatesLike a third-eye or the sixth-sense or whatever you want to call it, we knew something was up with the Japanese brand. It cannot be this simple, the 44GS was fantastic, but the GS was JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) no more. There is something amiss from their anniversary collection. And then we saw it, right at the very last section of the Japanese catalog (click here), a behemoth of a piece that Seiko hid so well. We stood silent staring into the photograph, and only three words were uttered - Spring Drive Tuna! Ad - Scroll to continue with articl
