MONOCHROME Wishes You a Splendid 2021 - Monochrome Watches
2020… What a year… what a year! Both on a professional as well as on a personal level this was a bizarre year, and not only due to that nasty Corona pandemic that is terrorizing humankind. Politics also reared its most ugly head on various sides of the globe and Baselworld, an old watch institution, fell apart. And let’s not forget the extreme fires that raged in Australia at the beginning of the year. What a year…?Usually when looking back at a year, it’s easy to focus on the best, coolest, most novel and most interesting watches that we’ve seen in a year. But this year is different. Of course, MONOCHROME is here to entertain you with news, reviews and in-depth stories from the world of watches. We, or actually I, cannot look at this year only from that perspective. 2020 started in the midst of the extreme bushfires that raged through Australia and we, like most of our online colleagues and many watch brands, supported the Watch & Act! The Certina DS-8 is a surprisingly vesatile and affordable collection
If you take a moment to consider the Swatch Group's current state of affairs, there are a lot of good things going on. Admittedly, some brands seem a bit lost, but for the most part, we're seeing some very nice moves by brands like Tissot, Hamilton, Longines and lately also Certina. We've had the funky DS-2 revival, the very good DS Action Diver Titanium and the chunky yet retro-cool DS Chronograph Automatic 1968 to play with! And Certina isn't done after those three, as there's also the more modern and sports-oriented Certina DS-8 range to consider. And it turns out to be a very good everyday watch, providing excellent value-for-money yet again.Admittedly, the Certina DS-8 is a watch that can be easily overlooked but if given a bit of attention can win over quite a few people, I'm sure. It's not going to break any records, nor does it look extremely outspoken but it ticks a lot of boxes most people might want in a reliable mechanical watch intended for everyday use. Ad - Sc

On the occasion of Watches & Wonders 2024, the Geneva-based manufacture goes even further with another commissioned piece (by the same collector), the Vacheron Constantin Berkley Grand Complication. Uniting no fewer than 63 complications, including the first Chinese Perpetual Calendar, it becomes the most complicated watch ever created. Again! Before delving into the details and intricacies of this utterly complex creation, a few words about its story. It took a dedicated team of three watchmakers an impressive 11 years to craft this exclusive bespoke timepiece, with one entire year devoted solely to the assembly process! Such a journey exemplifies a remarkable human endeavour and adventur
