Collector Corner - The Story of The JLC Reverso Chronograph Retrograde
Welcome back to The Collector's Corner. Earlier this year, we took a detailed look at one of the most impressive chronographs developed from the ground up during the 1990s, namely the Reverso Chronographe Retrograde. This, back in an era when in-house wasn't yet what it is today, was nothing short of an achievement, specifically considering we're talking chronograph. This article is something a little different from the usual content in The Collector's Corner. I recently had the chance to talk with Matthieu Sauret, Product Marketing & Heritage Director at Jaeger-LeCoultre and Philippe Vandel, movement designer and constructor at Jaeger-LeCoultre and to discuss the development of the Reverso Chronographe Retrograde and the zeitgeist of the 1990s. I am overjoyed that I can now share the conversation with you.?Editor's Note: interview has been edited for clarity. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
In-Depth: The History of the ETA 2824, The Mundane Calibre that shaped the industry
The ETA 2824 movement was a groundbreaking invention that left a lasting impact on the watchmaking industry. Introduced in the 1970s, the ETA 2824 quickly set the standard with its efficient mass production and reliable performance. It retained its popularity for over fifty years until the circumstances and demand for innovation led to the creation of the Powermatic 80, a movement designed to surpass the 2824-2 and uphold ETA’s legacy of excellence in the ever-evolving industrial process. Below is a summary of ETA 2824’s life, and it continues our series on mass-produced workhorse calibres that we started with the Valjoux 7750.Born to live strongIn the stories about the birth and origins of one of the most common watch calibres, the ETA 2824, which preceded the 2824-1 and 2824-2, I’ve encountered opinions mentioning Eterna’s 1955 calibre 1247 as a distant relative; some mentioned the Eterna-Matic, introduced in 1948, as a predecessor. Compared with the ETA/Valjo
Introducing the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime ref. 5175 - (LIVE Photos, Specs and Price) - Monochrome Watches
Patek Philippe is celebrating their 175th anniversary, and Thierry Stern chose to celebrate this landmark during the entire year starting from the beginning of Baselworld 2014 to the end of Baselworld 2015. This week Patek?launched a number of limited editions, commemorative pieces, to celebrate their anniversary. Most insiders expected an even more complicated pocket watch than the calibre 89, that was created for the brand's 150th anniversary. However Patek chose for another, at least as spectacular, commemorative piece, by introducing a wrist watch with no less than 20 complications. Here's the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime ref. 5175.Twenty complications in one wrist watch, that really is a lot. Usually when there's a super complicated watch, whether it's a pocket watch or wrist watch, it has massive dimensions. And while 20 complications is already incredibly impressive (wait until you see the list of complications), the (relatively) moderate dimensions of 47 mm in diameter by 1
Baselworld 2018 - Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Steel 36mm / 40mm (specs & price)
While we’ve already introduced the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date in bronze with a 36mm case, there are other novelties regarding the Pointer Date that Oris is introducing at Baselworld 2018. Alongside the bronze edition, Oris will also release some steel versions of the Pointer Date watch, this time in?40mm and 36mm cases, as well as with steel bracelets or leather straps – and again with an unbeatable quality/price ratio. Overview. While the bronze version of the?Oris Big Crown Pointer Date will certainly be one of the main talking pieces for the brand at Baselworld 2018, there are also some more rational steel versions. This watch is based on a limited edition launched mid-2017 – the?Oris Big Crown Pointer Date D.26 286 HB-RAG – which reintroduced one of Oris’ most famous designs, the 1984 Pointer Date watch, which in turn was based on a 1938 design. No more limitations now, the Pointer Date is back in the collection with various options. Below, some of the
Roger Dubuis adds colored stones to the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon - Monochrome Watches
What do we know about Roger Dubuis? Well, to make it short, Roger Dubuis is a proper?manufacture of Haute Horlogerie, creating extremely refined skeleton movements, and being the only brand to have its entire production stamped with the Hallmark of Geneva (and that alone must already give an indication of the beauty of the production…). Roger Dubuis is also a combination of complex mechanisms with a unique design, bold, sporty and clearly recognizable. Well, all of that can be seen in the latest addition to the catalogue, the?Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon, which now receive colored stones incrusted in its rubber bezel. The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon is not?a new watch and its movement (by the way a properly magnificent movement, as we’ve seen here) has been seen already in several watches. That must not prevent us to take a look back at it. Roger Dubuis is first of all a great manufacture, producing superb movements, m
