Editorial - What I Will Remember from 2021 Regarding Watches
2020 has been a difficult year for many of us. The combination of a pandemic and lockdowns has been dramatic for our lives and, because you're reading a magazine dedicated to watches, for the watchmaking industry. This year, 2021, has certainly been better on multiple levels, but not yet ideal, as we're still living in a world full of uncertainties. Looking at the bright side of things, 2021 has been a great year for MONOCHROME. We've enlarged our core team with new members, we've published more articles than ever before (over 1,100 articles in total) and we successfully launched two collaboration watches – the Montre de Souscription 1 and the Montre de Souscription 2 – that sold out faster than we ever dreamed of. In this regard, I think 2021 has been a great year for us. But, as said, not everything was perfect. As we're about to turn the page on this year, I wanted to share with you what I will remember from 2021, the ups and downs, the trends, my feelings on the overall
Introducing the World's Thinnest Tourbillon: the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon - Monochrome Watches
Bulgari sets a new record for the world’s thinnest tourbillon. Both for the thinnest tourbillon movement and for tourbillon watch. Bulgari not simply breaks the previous record by a few percent, no, the previous record is simply CRUSHED by what Bulgari accomplished with the new Octo Finissimo Tourbillon. The spectacular ultra-thin tourbillon movement, measures just 1.95 mm, while the entire watch is just 5.00 mm in height. Bulgari, much like Cartier, has always been a maker of high-end jewelry, also called Haute Joaillerie. Bulgari also made timepieces, nice timepieces, however nothing spectacular for the average watch enthusiast. When Bulgari re-labeled the sub-brands Daniel Roth and Gerald Genta (which they bought many years ago from the name-givers) and only put the Bulgari name on the dial, we knew they wanted to be recognized as one of the serious players in the field of Haute Horlogerie. They had the knowledge, skills, and expertise. And with the introduction of the world
In-Depth: Diving With The New Aquastar Model 60
Aquastar made a name for itself in the early 1960s as one of the first purveyors of purpose-built dive watches. Starting as a company that made watches and other maritime instruments, it became one of the most well-known watch brands for serious SCUBA divers and underwater professionals. It found a certain type of fame on the wrists of everyone from Jacques Cousteau’s team of explorers to US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, who wore an Aquastar while aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste for his pioneering journey to the bottom of Challenger Deep at a record-breaking depth of 10,911 metres (for the record, the Deep Sea Special was strapped outside, some Longines stopwatches were onboard, and Walsh was wearing an Aquastar). After a bit of a lull during the quartz crisis, Aquastar was revived in 2020 by none other than Rick Marei, the man famous for rejuvenating another esoteric dive watch brand, Doxa. Today, we take the brand’s latest creation underwater, the Aquastar Model 60, a tribu
Five Cool New Chronograph Watches Priced Below 3,5K
It’s not the first time year we’ve grouped together a selection of chronograph watches, and it’s likely not going to be the last time. With Watches & Wonders already well and truly in the past, and Geneva Watch Days not quite here yet, brand’s haven’t slowed down much to present us with new and exciting watches. And with the chronograph being a fan favourite complication, it didn’t take too long to compile a Buying Guide or two. And now we revisit the faithful “Chrono” once more, with six of the most recent new entries of this ever-popular type of wristwatch.?Hanhart 417 ES 1954When it comes to historically relevant, and vintage-inspired chronographs at a relatively affordable price, it’s impossible to ignore Hanhart. Especially when they release a more compact and downright fantastic version of the iconic 417 ES, a very classically styled pilot’s chronograph. Measuring 39mm across, where its larger brother comes in at 42m
Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon 6500T - Hands-On, Specs & Price
Today, we’re not going to do a regular “Monochrome-Style” review, detailing every element of a watch or dissecting every technical feature. Instead, we’re going to do something “for the sake of watchmaking“, for the beauty of an art – because, at a certain point, I think we can move to another level and talk about proper works of art. To illustrate this, we’re going to look at just one watch, the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon, by focussing on some small but extremely important features, and demonstrating what high-end watchmaking is… And you’ll see, it doesn’t need to be loud and demonstrative.Of course, we could easily go on about every detail of this?Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon, which was first presented in September 2016. We could explain that it is a simplified version?(if I can say…) of the ultra-complex Calibre 2755, a watch that combines tourb
