Watches NEWS
A young Frenchman pursuing a career in clock- & watchmaking.
Over the course of the past couple of months, we've introduced you to a fair number of new and exciting watchmakers doing some fascinating things. One thing that becomes clear talking to these individuals is the love for sharing their passion, and there's a shared network of watchmakers helping each other move forward, perfecting skills and learning new traits in the process. Theo Levaltier, a student who is about to complete a 7-year study at the Lycee Edgar Faure in Morteau, France, is no different. This youngster, only 22 years old, has worked with and is trained by Florent Lecomte, Thierry Ducret and others, and is now looking to set out on his own. Initially, his plan is to restore historical clocks and watches, but seeing his work on school projects, we'd happily see more of his own work in the future as well!Robin Nooij, MONOCHROME: Theo, I think it's best if you first introduce yourself to our readers? Can you share a bit of your background? Ad - Scroll to continue w
Introducing The Spectacular Bulgari Octo Roma Mediterranea and Cameo Imperiale Secret Watches For Men
Bulgari is becoming a force to contend with in the watchmaking arena, and not just because of its ultra-thin, razor-sharp Octo Finissimo range that has scaled the podium to achieve ‘iconic’ stature in less than a decade. As Rome’s most celebrated jeweller, Bulgari’s high-jewellery watches are no less spectacular. And we’re not just talking about women’s high jewellery watches but watches designed for both sexes that combine horological content with voluptuous stone settings. The launch of the spectacular Mediterranea high jewellery and watch collection, interpreting the vibrant colours and marine life of the Mediterranean in precious stones, includes a one-off men’s Octo Roma Mediterranea secret watch powered by Bulgari’s record-breaking, ultra-thin flying tourbillon movement. Housed in its chapter dedicated to Roman Splendor is another unique Octo Roma secret watch bearing the profile of a Roman emperor sculpted in cameo, concealing the
Introducing The New, Vintage-Inspired Vulcain Cricket Nautical Alarm Dive Watch (Live Pics & Price)
The name Vulcain is, for obvious reasons, often associated with the alarm complication. The venerable brand, founded in 1858 in Le Locle, Switzerland, has since 1947 made this function a signature element of so many of its watches. Slightly dormant in past years, the brand has recently been revived and various historical models have been brought back, with original movements and appealing retro-styled designs. In addition to the Skindiver Nautique, a classic dive watch, and an elegant chronograph, it’s mostly the return of the Cricket watch that caught our attention. Now, it’s time for one of the brand’s most important watches to return, a diving instrument with an underwater-ready alarm function, the Vulcain Cricket Nautical.?historical referencesIt took almost 100 years for Vulcain to properly make a name for itself. But in 1947, the brand and its manufacture will create a watch/movement that will define almost entirely its future production, the Cricket watch. To p
Introducing Patek Philippe Minute Repeater Alarm 1938P Tribute to Philippe Stern
A watch that should have been first presented thanks to a unique piece for Only Watch 2023 (which has been postponed), we knew that Patek Philippe?was on its way to presenting a new model entirely dedicated to its former President, father of the current President and a man of great importance for both the brand and the Swiss watch industry, Mister Philippe Stern. In order to celebrate his 85th birthday, and as a tribute to his father, Thierry Stern (of the fourth generation of the Stern family, appointed president in 2009) honours his father by creating a special edition of 30 watches, a complex model including a newly developed movement, created solely for this piece and never to be used again. Here’s the Patek Philippe Minute Repeater Alarm 1938P.?Father and son – Philippe Stern and Thierry SternWhat could be a better tribute to the man who has been at the head of Patek Philippe from 1993 to 2009, a manufacture specialized since its inception in chiming watches, than a mi
Vacheron Constantin Historique American 1921 - driver's watch - Monochrome Watches
Vacheron Constantin released a re-issue of a 1920’s watch at SIHH 2009. The Historique American 1921 is probably one of the most beautiful watches Vacheron Constantin ever made, but it also has something weird…In 1919 Vacheron Constantin made a watch in a cushion shape case with a crown placed at the upper left corner, at the 11 ‘o clock position. Usually the crown is at right side of the case mostly at the 3 ‘o clock position, sometimes at the 4 ‘o clock position. Some watches even place the crown at the left side, at the 9 ‘o clock position. The crown position Vacheron Constantin has chosen is very remarkable. I believe this was a so called driver’s watch.Due to the crown position and the use of a conventional movement from a pocket watch, the dial is turned slightly so the 12 ‘o clock position is where the crown is, at the upper left corner. If the watch was worn on the right wrist, it was possible to read time while keeping your hands
