SIHH 2015 - Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept RD1 Acoustic Research Minute Repeater - How it possibly works? - Monochrome-Watches
A few weeks before the 2015 Edition of the SIHH, Audemars-Piguet introduced something highly interesting, a pure concept watch with a single aim: being the Minute Repeater 2.0. based on the now famous Royal Oak Concept case, this watch summarizes 8 years of research and development, all devoted to improve the?volume, pitch, tones and harmony of sound of a minute repeater. However AP remains extremely discreet about how this watch works and what are the solutions employed. But, you know us here at Monochrome-Watches, we’ll try to give you some clues after having seen the watch in the ‘metal’.Audemars-Piguet claims to have the best ever Minute Repeater with this?Royal Oak Concept RD1 Acoustic Research. To achieve this result, it took their internal R&D teams (lead by APRP – Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi)?together with the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne)?8 years of hard work. Tissot Telemeter 1938 Chronograph Heritage - Hands-On Review, Price
If the brand has been under everybody’s radar recently after the launch of the PRX collection (and rightfully so), Tissot is a watchmaker with a deep history. Born in 1853, the brand has long been involved in sports timing and chronograph watches. And with this in mind, the brand has released multiple accessible and attractive “Heritage” models modelled after glorious watches of the past, such as the Heritage 1973 Chronograph, the PRS 516 Automatic Chronograph recently or the Heritage 1948 Chronograph. Today, the brand looks even deeper into its archives and brings back a design of the late 1930s, a typical and charm-packed chronograph watch that features all of the traits of the era, yet in a modernized package that includes a deeply revised and competitive movement. Here’s the new Tissot Telemeter 1938.Following its founding during the mid-19th century in the small Jura-based town of Le Locle, Tissot quickly specialised in manufacturing accessible yet precisel
Interview: An Encounter with Wizard Watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin, The Creator of the Ulysse Nardin Freak
Historian, archaeologist, mathematician, philosopher and watchmaker, Ludwig Oechslin is the perfect example of a polymath whose knowledge across different disciplines fuels his innovation and creativity. In the 1980s, his encounter with Rolf W. Schnyder turned Ulysse Nardin into one of the most innovative watch brands around. The presentation of a new Freak at Dubai Watch Week 2023 gave us the perfect opportunity to sit down with this wizard watchmaker.?Xavier Markl, MONOCHROME – What is your first horological memory, and how did you get hooked on watchmaking?Ludwig?Oechslin – When I was a kid at boarding school, the school bell used to ring every hour of the day. When I went to university, there were no more bells to let you know that a class was starting, and I figured I needed a watch to tell the time. But I was not a wristwatch fan. So, I started looking for a pocket watch. The first watch that I saw and wanted was a repeater. But it was out of my reach. I bought a less
Review Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 40mm White Gold
The Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921, a unique cushion-shaped model with a diagonal display, celebrates its centennial in 2021. One of our favourite models at MONOCHROME, the Historiques American 1921 has a great story behind it and has not lost an iota of its idiosyncratic personality in the past 100 years. Three new iterations of the American 1921 were unveiled during the latest edition of Watches & Wonders – two in 18k white gold and a third in platinum. Today we'll be taking our loupe to the 40mm white gold edition and discover its indisputable and enduring Art Deco appeal. The exhilarating 1920sThe aftermath of WWI heralded a decade of optimism and excess known as the Roaring Twenties. Characterised as a decade of emancipation with flappers dancing the Charleston and jazz music bursting on the scene, it also marked the advent of Art Deco, a style that graced everything from skyscrapers to furniture and from jewellery to watches. Sleek curves, geometric shapes
Weekly Watch Photo - TAG Heuer Autavia - Monochrome Watches
Some years ago – in a period when TAG Heuer had advertisements with celebrities who know how to strap a watch on their wrist instead of holding them in their hands – they had a “Classics” collection comprising a variety of re-issues of important watches from the 1960’s and 1970’s. Today our Weekly Watch Photo is dedicated to one of these watches, which is also one of my all time favorites… the TAG Heuer Autavia. The Classics collection featured the first re-issues of the Monaco, but also featured the Monza (and the gorgeous Monza Calibre 36 with an El Primero movement), several Carrera models and the Autavia was the last model to become part of this collection. The first years these models came out with just “Heuer” on the dial, later “TAG” and the new logo were added. My first expensive watch was a vintage (and by that I mean it’s from the 1970’s and not a re-issue that is a few years old) Autavia, a rare one
