Hands-on: A Personal Take On The Stunning Moritz Grossmann Hamatic
To kick things off, this will be a very personal story, and yes, it is about a mechanical watch. When I first got into watchmaking, I knew very little about the history of the industry or the different regions in the world that dominate it. My knowledge came from magazines, movies and TV shows, billboards and the early days of social media, and that was about it. That is until I joined MONOCHROME in 2012 and started to seriously fall down the proverbial rabbit hole. My knowledge and experience grew, my interests shifted, and a whole world of new and exciting brands opened up, from very small one-man outfits to corporate behemoths. There’s just something special about how watches from this part of the world are made. And I’m not arguing if they’re better than Swiss or Japanese-made high-end watches, but the style is very pu

Hands-On: The IWC Pilot's Watch Performance Chronograph 41
As we approached the end of 2023, the landscape for those seeking an obtainable motorsport-inspired chronograph underwent a shift, offering a slightly broader array of options. This was spurred by the notable introduction of an extension to IWC‘s Pilot’s Watch series: the Performance Chronograph 41. Available in titanium to commemorate the brand’s enduring partnership with Mercedes-Benz AMG and in Ceratanium to pay homage to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, these releases sparked considerable excitement. Rather, they represent IWC’s interpretation of the classic racing chronograph. They are not intended to replace the PilotR
Panerai PAM00396 - Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Ceramica - Monochrome Watches
There are those in the watchmaking community who hear the word Tourbillon' and immediately think of French nobility, sitting in a stuffy parlor, reading the time from a delicate porcelain-dialed watch (Marie Antoinette). The functions are simple. The movements are crude and worse bought-in. (Why can't all wa
Porsche Design 1919 Globetimer UTC - Baselworld 2019 (Specs & Price)
If you analyze the function of an object, its form often becomes obvious, was the credo of Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (founder of Porsche Design). “Form follows function” is something we often hear in the watch world but with Porsche Design, it is a matter of fact. Apparently simple yet perfectly functional, this has become even truer with the brand’s latest addition to the iconic 1919 range. Meet the Porsche Design 1919 Globetimer UTC, a functional, super-practical,?well-designed traveller’s watch. The basic GMT/dual-time watch usually requires the crown to be pulled (or unscrewed) to set local time when you land in a new time zone. On a standard ETA/Sellita movement, it’s the home time that is changed, meaning that several steps are required (pulling the crown, adjusting the local time, then putting the crown back and adjusting the ho
