The Collector's Series - Diving deep with Mark's Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Chronographe Flyback Quantieme Complet - Monochrome Watches
When you think iconic dive watches', what comes to mind?… Submariner? Sea-Dweller? Omega Seamaster? Panerai Radiomir?… Well, the good news is you would be absolutely correct. However, you would have overlooked one heavy hitter of the watch world: the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, a watch seen by many hard-core divers as an essential tool in their armoury and by many collectors as their pride and joy. It is not just a functional watch, but a historically important one. And today we're happy to show you a very nice example,?together?with Mark and his Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Chronographe Flyback Quantieme Complet. It was back in 1953 the first commercial Fifty Fathoms was released. The watch was developed by Jacques Fiechter, Blancpain CEO at the time and an early scuba diving fan. It was later refined for French combat divers with the addition of magnetic shielding. The story begins when Captain Robert Bob Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud, both commanders at the French C
Interview - Davide Cerrato of Montblanc On The Brand and What's Coming Next
We're in Switzerland quite often – according to my wife, who keeps track, I've spent a quarter of last year in the land of watchmaking. Whether for the videos that we make, or events organised by watch brands, or manufacture visits, or the GPHG award night, it always means you're meeting a lot of people from the watch industry and the opportunity of running into friends. Recently I met with my good friend Davide Cerrato, Managing Director Of Montblanc Watch Division, and we talked about how things are at Montblanc, what's going to happen at Goodwood and more.Davide Cerrato, Managing Director Of Montblanc Watch DivisionHere's a recap of the talk we had, just outside the EPHJ, seated on a bench in the sun. The weather was great, birds were singing and it was nice to run into Davide and have the opportunity to get an update of how things have been going since we last saw one another in January at the SIHH (in this video interview).Frank Geelen (FG): In January, Montblanc presented i
Hands-On - Oris Divers Sixty-Five Steel and Bronze (40mm and 36mm) Specs & Price
Oris expands its highly successful retro Divers Sixty-Five family with the incorporation of two models with a bronze ring hugging the rotating bezel. Exuding strong vintage appeal with the two-tone black and warm golden and bronze touches, it is patently clear that Oris has been listening to its customers and has tapped directly into the trend for smaller unisex case sizes (36mm) and the ongoing fascination with bronze. Presented in 40mm and 36mm diameters, the new Oris Divers Sixty-Five models won't sink you financially and retail for under CHF 2,000 for the models on a leather or NATO strap.Evolution, not revolutionLaunched in 2015, the Divers Sixty-Five was Oris' interpretation of a retro dive watch. Inspired by an Oris diver of 1965, the faithful vintage aesthetics of the model won immediate favour and were also an eye-opener for many watch enthusiasts who couldn't get over the excellent price/quality ratio.?Although some quibbled with its water-resistance threshold of just 100 met
Introducing: The 2024 Kurono 34mm Calligra Special Project
The brainchild of Japanese independent watchmaker Hajime Asaoka, known for his high-end tourbillons or chronographs, Kurono Tokyo is the man’s vision of a more accessible brand. Still driven by an almost obsessive attention to detail, which somehow explains the low availability of these watches, Asaoka is here focussing on design more than watchmaking. Following the 2022 series of Art Deco watches, and the 2023 Sector Dial models, Kurono Tokoy’s 34mm timepiece is back with the Calligra Special Project and its dial with hand-designed Breguet numerals.“For this new 34mm series, I have adopted Breguet hour markers. Generally, it is very difficult to place and balance Arabic numerals in a circular pattern as indices, because they were originally meant to be placed in a straight horizontal line. but Breguet indices seem to have been designed from the beginning to be placed in a circular pattern on the dial of a watch,” explains Hajime Asaoka. A Day at the Races: with Tudor at the Historic Grand Prix in Zandvoort - Monochrome Watches
Cars and watches, a great combination, and this combi?comes with a very legitimate historical background. For the second year Tudor was sponsor of the Historic Grand Prix in Zandvoort and we got the chance to enjoy a great day with them in the Paddock Club, and of course strolling through the paddock to see so many awe-inspiring cars. From pre World War II cars, to recent Formula 1 race cars, from heavily tuned Mini Coopers, to dozens of vintage BMW 2002Ti’s and CSL’s, a marvellous Ferrari 250GT, many AC Cobras, and even a Shelby Daytona! And they all raced like the devil was chasing them. Old or not, these cars raced like crazy. We got to enjoy the best of two very interesting worlds: cars and watches!?As you’re probably well aware off, watches used to be purpose build mechanisms. As of the early 1900’s the watch, until then worn in a small vest pocket, and attached to a chain, slowly found their way to the wrist. And since cars also emerged around that time, m
