Audemars Piguet [Re]master01 Selfwinding Chronograph - Introducing, Price
For those who are into watchmaking, the name Audemars Piguet might represent some of the finest watches, but also modern and bold designs. Whether it is the iconic Royal Oak, the robust Offshore or the recent Code 11.59, Audemars Piguet rarely looks to the past when it comes to its watches, or at least when to comes to the design of its watches. But this is about to change. Today Audemars Piguet launches a new watch which looks at one of the most iconic wrist chronographs of its past, the ref. 1533. Its name is the [Re]master01 Selfwinding Chronograph. And it really offers a strong dose of desirability.First of all, this isn’t a proper vintage re-edition. As indicated by its name, [Re]master01 “is a contemporary remastering of one of our past creations” says Michael Friedman, Audemars Piguet's Head of Complications. This is a blend of heritage and modernity. As such, it might be visually inspired by the past model but comes in modern dimensions and features an innovat
First Look: The New Furlan Marri Disco Volante Collection
Co-founded by Swiss industrial designer Andrea Furlan and watch collector Hamad Al Marri, Furlan Marri launched on Kickstarter in 2021 with a beautifully designed vintage chronograph powered by a hybrid mecha-quartz engine. The next act, in 2022, was an equally handsome vintage black sector dial equipped with a mechanical movement that won over the MONOCHROME team. Today, Furlan Marri sticks to its vintage designs and mechanical guns and releases a trilogy of Disco Volante models in 38mm cases with manual-winding Peseux movements. The Disco Volante or Flying Saucer watch design has been kicking around since the late 1930s, an Art Deco meets futuristic space-age watch featured in the catalogues of many top-tier brands. The classic traits of the Disco Volante – manifested in models from Omega, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Cartier and Universal Geneve, all the way down the decades to Gerald Genta's 1953 design (ref. 5093) for Audemars Piguet – are round cases, an absenc
Buying Guide - Highlights From The Geneva Watch Days 2020
With the cancellation of Baselworld and Watches & Wonders, the Geneva Watch Days event was one of the very few multi-brand watch events of the year. Seventeen brands? showcased their novelties between August 26 and August 29 in the “capital of luxury watchmaking”. The event was decentralised as each brand was presenting novelties in their individual showrooms. We masked up and ventured to Geneva to get a long-awaited horological fix! Here are some of our highlight watches.Ferdinand Berthoud Chronometre FB 2REFerdinand Berthoud's first-round model will be one of the watches of the year. Although the brand's focus remains the same – precision chronometry – the second Berthoud collection comes with a new case and a new calibre. The Chronometre FB 2RE picks up the shape of Berthoud marine clocks and their modular construction. It is based on a cylindrical container fitted with short, tapering lugs secured to the case by stylised bolts. Time is displayed on a tra
Up Close With The High-Beat Low-Weight Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon
Longines is known to tread carefully in developing new watches, often delving into its hugely impressive archives to find inspiration for tons of fine heritage-related watches. It’s also a brand that doesn’t jump in unexpected directions, resulting in strange and inexplicable choices and subsequent releases.?So it’s fair to say this?Ultra-Chron Carbon took us by surprise, as it’s the very first time – that I know of – that Longines has ventured out of the field of metal cases and into a composite material. There simply has never been a watch from the Winged Hourglass like this before. More than enough reason to dive deeper into this lightweight, high-beat Ultra-Chron Carbon! The Ultra-Chron holds a special place in Longines’ extensive history. The name goes back to 1968 and thus predates Zenith’s famous high-beat El Primero automatic chronograph by a year. The reference 7970 (below, left), with which the Ultra-Chron was introduced, was a 2
Introducing: An Array of new Longines Master with Engraved Dials
Possibly the most classic and timeless range of Longines, the Master Collection has long been slightly overlooked since its inception in 2005, maybe due to a rather shy design. Yet, in 2022 to mark the brand’s 190th anniversary, Longines gave this collection a highly appealing twist, with grained dials and engraved Breguet-like numerals, elevating this collection to a whole new level. Following the success of the 3 original limited editions, the brand released a more compact small seconds collection, this time part of the permanent range. And now, it’s time to establish this design and engraved dials as classics, with now fewer than 15 new references, in steel and gold, and in 40mm and 34mm cases.?Since its creation in 2005, the Longines Master Collection has been one of the brand’s most important ranges. Classic, elegant and contemporary, it was also a vessel for complications, as it even included an annual calendar or refined moonphase models. Design-wise, this coll
