Breaking: The IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar Wins the GPHG 2024
The 2024 edition of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve has just unveiled the grand winner of this year’s awards ceremony! Often regarded as the Oscars of Watchmaking, the GPHG stands for a celebration of all things surrounding mechanical watchmaking. A specially selected jury, which included our founder and editor-in-chief Frank Geelen, has narrowed down all the entries into multiple categories with six watches each. Out of all the entries, only one has been selected as the grand winner, receiving the coveted “Aiguille d’Or” trophy for Best of Show. In addition to that, each category winner also received an award. Last year, the stunningly complex Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Ultra-Complication Universelle, the most complicated wristwatch ever created by the brand, took the golden hand back home. This year, the jury of the GPHG 2024 rewarded astronomical precision with the IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar, the brand’s first secular calendar. And we
The Full Yellow Gold Chopard Alpine Eagle 41
The Chopard Alpine Eagle, a direct descendant of the slightly baroque St. Moritz model of the 1980s, was resurrected and modernised to reflect contemporary tastes. Since its revival, we’ve seen the Alpine Eagle expand to become an entire collection with a tourbillon,?an extra-large chronograph or a compact feminine version, as well as many colours or material combinations. And now, there’s a new, far more flamboyant model in the range, one that captures the original Midas temperament of the watch: the new yellow gold Chopard Alpine Eagle 41.?The Chopard Alpine Eagle is a true family affair. The predecessor of this watch, the 1980s St. Moritz watch (named after a high-end ski resort in Switzerland), was designed by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele when he started working at the company directed by his father – it was actually his first project. Of course, with the evolution of tastes, the concept of this sporty-chic, slightly baroque and flamboyant watch went out of style, and
Introducing: The new Patek Philippe Calatrava 8 Day 5328G
Patek Philippe introduces a new and powerful manual-winding calibre for the equally new Calatrava 8 Day Ref. 5328G. As you have gleaned from the name, the new twin barrel movement delivers an impressive 192-hour or 8-day power reserve. While the watch is officially a Calatrava, it shares traits with the more casual aesthetic of the Travel Time 5326 and upholds one of Patek's objectives for 2025 by providing practical, user-friendly complications and carefree maintenance for everyday life.Since 1932, Patek's Calatrava has been considered the paragon of the ultra-thin dress watch. Although there are still classical references, the collection took a different flight path in 2015 with the launch of the unexpected Calatrava Travel Time 5524. In 2022, Patek introduced the Calatrava Annual Calendar Travel Time 5326, an eminently practical traveller's watch. With its textured dial and guilloche details on the case, the new reference is the natural sibling of the Annual Calendar. Ad
SIHH 2018 - Geoffroy Lefebvre of Jaeger-LeCoultre, On The New Collection - Monochrome Watches
When it comes to discussing classic dress watches, Jaeger-LeCoultre is a name that often comes up early and repeatedly. The Manufacture is a well-established player in this segment of the market and is very, very good at what it does. As Geoffroy Lefebvre, Deputy CEO, explains in the above video, however, JLC also wants to give its customers an attractive option in the everyday sports/casual watch category. The result, is the new Polaris collection, inspired in large part by the Memovox Polaris timepiece from 1968. Although it may be an unexpected move from the brand, it is certainly not an unwelcome one.If you've been following along with our SIHH 2018 coverage (which we hope you have!), you likely would have read all about the new Polaris collection on MONOCHROME already.
