Review: The A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Time Zone in Platinum
In 2020, after 15 years of production and many variations, the Lange 1 Time Zone received a highly anticipated update. It was introduced in three different versions: cases crafted from yellow gold (limited to 100), pink gold, and white gold, with champagne, argente and black dials, respectively. This new model came with a fresh calibre and featured a more organised and streamlined indication layout while retaining its fundamental design elements. This summer, A. Lange & Sohne introduced a platinum Lange 1 Time Zone version with a rhodium-coloured dial, prompting us to conduct a thorough review of what has to be called the traveller's stealth.BackgroundIn October next year, A. Lange & Sohne will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Lange 1 watch’s introduction to the public (24 October 1994). In a concise span, this stunning timepiece became an instantly recognisable and coveted item, essentially becoming the face of A. Lange & Sohne and lending its name to a
A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Outsize Date (SIHH 2018) - Monochrome Watches
To me, one of the true marks of a great watch manufacturer is the ability to make interesting and desirable timepieces across a range of price points. Unfortunately, few brands seem to be able to achieve this with any consistency. There are exceptions of course, and A. Lange & Sohne is most certainly one of them. Proving my point is the new Saxonia Outsize Date, which was officially launched last month at SIHH 2018. We managed to spend a bit of hands-on time with the watch and can confirm it is as nice on the wrist as it looks in the photos. We've already written about the technical details of the Saxonia Outsize Date in an earlier article, which you can read here. We'll cover some of those details again briefly, but the main focus of this hands-on article is to give you an idea of what the watch is actually like in the metal. In terms of positioning, this watch is somewhat reminiscent of the Langematik Sax-O-Mat with Date, which existed in the Saxonia collection before the range wa
Nomos CEO Uwe Ahrendt On The Significance Of The Brand's Glashutte Origins
For more than 30 years, Nomos has been part of the monumental effort to resurrect the German watchmaking tradition that once thrived in the Glashutte region in the easternmost part of the country. The region is home to a dozen or so brands, from relatively affordable names like Union Glashutte and Nomos?to ultra-high-end like A. Lange & Sohne and Moritz Grossmann, all honouring the Glashutte watchmaking heritage. Nomos is known for its lighthearted yet sobre Bauhaus-inspired design ethos and has amassed a strong community following over the years. Located in the town’s old train station, we recently visited the brand to check out some novelties and interview the brand’s CEO, Uwe Ahrendt, about the importance of this heritage.Robin Nooij, MONOCHROME Watches – The fall of the Berlin Wall was a pivotal movement for the Glashutte region. Can you explain what this meant for the people and how it created the foundations for a brand like Nomos to build on? Ad
The New Nomos Autobahn Directors Cut With Steel Bracelet
Imagine yourself travelling through Germany, in your beloved sports car, and heading to an event you've been looking forward to for months, years even. The past two years travelling has been very challenging, sometimes downright impossible, and you are glad the world is opening up again. You find yourself in one of the sections of the German Autobahn, a section without a speed limit if the circumstances allow it. And yes, the weather is clear, you look down on your Nomos Autobahn Director's Cut, and see you have time for some fun. So, with the road opening up, you plant your foot down and head for the horizon, fast.It is a scene something like this I imagine to have crossed the mind of designer Werner Aisslinger penning the first sketches for the Autobahn collection for Nomos. Free of worries, not a care in the world at that very moment, with miles of open roads ahead (Free of Baustelle hopefully). Looking at the Autobahn, you immediately get the connection to cars, racing, highway's,
Introducing the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Memovox Timer
When it comes to chiming watches, most of us will immediately think about the ultra-complex and desirable minute repeater. And Jaeger-LeCoultre is no stranger to this complication. However, there are more than repeater watches to sound the time. A simpler, highly practical but rarely seen function is the alarm.? Mastered by JLC for 70 years now, the alarm can be heard in the Memovox series of timepieces. Today, the brand introduces two new Memovox models, one permanent edition part of the new Master Control collection, and one limited edition with a novel ‘timer’ indication, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Memovox Timer. The alarm functionDespite being one of the most useful (and charming) of all complications, the alarm remains surprisingly rare in horology. Few are the brands to integrate this chiming complication in its watches, and even fewer manufacture them in-house. An alarm watch is designed to ring a signal at a defined time. Everyone probably has cursed their a
