Collector's Guide - Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore 25721ST
The Royal Oak Offshore may not be on everybody’s wishlist this Christmas, but quite a few gentlemen would be okay with getting a first edition of “The Beast” to crown their collections. The hype might revolve around the Royal Oak designed by Gerald Genta in 1972, but the Offshore series is no less critical to Audemars Piguet and its current success. The Offshore has a history and meaning; it is legendary and turns 30 next year. As our guest, we had to have it here in the Collector’s Corner.Emmanuel Gueit, designer of the Royal Oak Offshore in 1993Background – From RO to ROOThis year Audemars Piguet celebrates 50 years of the Royal Oak, which in 1972 was nothing short of an impressive innovation in design, and more. VIDEO - Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph, the World's Thinnest Mechanical Chronograph
It all started with the thinnest tourbillon in 2014. Later followed the thinnest minute repeater and the thinnest automatic watch. In 2018, Bvlgari unveiled the thinnest automatic watch ever (also the thinnest tourbillon). This year, the brand breaks its fifth record in ultra-thin watches, with the thinnest mechanical chronograph ever made – and it is automatic and features a GMT function… Just that! We’re going to talk about this “fifth element” with Guido Terreni, Managing Director at Bvlgari Watches, who will reveal all the secrets behind the impressive Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT.Bvlgari’s decision to enter the race for the thinnest watches was perfectly planned. When creating the Octo Finissimo collection, the brand had a plan for the future: breaking one record after another and covering the entire spectrum of classical complications. Yet, the quest for thinness isn’t just about numbers. It was conceived as a whole, in order to
The Collector's Series: Up Close and Personal with the URWERK UR-103
Readers of The Collector's Series and the Collector's Corner know that I sometimes contribute to the column - writing articles for the series is just one more way for me to get excited about vintage watches. I read a little about a specific watch, go deeper down the rabbit hole, and before I know it, I'm looking for listings on Chrono24. Sometimes, I write weird, off-kilter posts like that time in October 2022 when I visited Ond?ej Berkus' atelier (and also a couple of weeks ago) and spent the day talking about watches and life with him. For this artistic freedom, I thank the team at MONOCHROME! This piece falls in that same vein. Call it my way of becoming better acquainted with a piece I own; call it the ramblings of someone who has now well and truly lost all his marbles. In any case, I hope you enjoy the ride. Because the story of this Urwerk UR-103 is quite a complex one.Editor’s Note: @aaaaaaaaaarian should be credited for some of the photos found in this article (images wi
