The A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk Striking Time (video, live pics & price) - Monochrome Watches
It was in 2009, and it was a total blast. A. Lange & Sohne, a conservative member of the German School of Watchmaking, a strong actor of our beloved industry, more used to create sublime but classical, understated dress watches, known all around the community of collectors for being the creator of the desirable Lange 1?and the superb Datograph, this exact company launched the Zeitwerk, a disruptive watch at first that became then iconic, for being in every way faithful to what the Saxonian manufacture?is. Surprisingly, the Zeitwerk doesn’t look like a Lange but it is totally a Lange watch. This is the reason why we had to review the?A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk Striking Time.Introduction to the??A. Lange & Sohne ZeitwerkWhat makes the Zeitwerk so special in the A. Lange & Sohne collection? Is it the technology? Well, of course it has something special hidden in its movement, but so does the?Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar Terraluna for example. Is it its design or i
Business - Analysis of the Swiss watchmaking industry in 2014 - Monochrome-Watches
The?Swiss watchmaking industry is known to be a dream factory. If you’re a collector and a frequent reader of Monochrome-Watches, you certainly know what we mean by that. However, Swiss manufactures are also (actually mainly) businesses, with a unique goal: selling watches, achieving a worldwide recognition and creating value. In order to understand a bit more about this industry that we too often view only from the product side, here are some interesting figures about the year 2014.Let’s start immediately with the impressive numbers. While the production numbers of Swiss-made watches is almost insignificant as part of the entire annual watch production (which includes all vast numbers of cheap quartz watches produced in China), the value created by the Swiss manufactures is imposing. As the graph shows, Switzerland only produces one watch against?fifty?produced in the entire world. When you consider those numbers, just think that this small country is also responsible of m
The Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer (Specs & Price)
The Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer is one of the most interesting technical concepts presented recently. Inspired by the George Daniels' Independent Double Wheel Escapement, revered watchmaker Bernhard Lederer developed a high-performance double-wheel escapement driven by two independent gear trains, each with its own barrel and constant force remontoir d'egalite. Following the presentation of first prototypes about a year ago, the Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer now comes in its final version. If virtually nothing has changed from a technical perspective, its new dial bringing an elegant new look and an interesting perspective on the movement and its concept.? Technical ReminderThe basic operating principle of a mechanical movement is the following. Energy is stored by the mainspring inside the barrel. The energy is released via the gear train that drives the hands. The speed at which the gears rotate is controlled by the regulator that comprises the es
Introducing: The New TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper Gold
Last year, TAG Heuer launched the Skipper, a watch design inspired by one of the brand’s historic designs. Heuer created the original Skipper after the yacht Intrepid’s victory in the 1967 America’s Cup, where the crew used Heuer’s yachting timers and Aquastar wristwatches. The new Skipper, made of stainless steel, paid tribute to this heritage. This year’s Skipper is even more special, with a precious metal casing that preserves its vintage inspiration. The new TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper has a 39mm case made of 18K 5N rose gold, measuring 13.9mm in thickness with a lug-to-lug distance of 46mm. It features a blend of fine-brushed and polished finishes and classic rose gold chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock, alongside a rose gold crown at 3 o’clock. The case has a screw-down caseback made of solid rose gold sapphire, ensuring a water resistance of up to 100m. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
We've compiled a list of watches sized below 40mm.
Watchmaking is very much a trend-driven industry, with, of course, a core selection of models, colours, sizes and materials standing the test of time. Colours come and go, sizes go up and down, and although new materials are regularly experimented with, the vast majority come in steel, with titanium, bronze and gold being the most popular alternatives. When it comes to the size of the watch, this is most often dictated by the movement, the intended purpose and its overall design. But, as these five watches will show you, the current trend for sizing a watch down to more compact dimensions results in some genuinely cool watches.Baltic Tricompax ChronographIn just a relatively short amount of time, Baltic has transcended the status of a microbrand and established itself as a name that’s most likely here to stay. Previously Baltic relied on Asian movements (no shame in that!) but recently upped its game as it presented the Baltic x Peter Auto Tricompax Special Edition racing set. Th
