The Battle of Elegant Time-Only Watches Part 1 - Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat - Review, Price
Cartier is the undisputed master of the shaped watch and for the last century has launched some of the most emblematic and unforgettable watch collections for men and women alike. But Cartier also offers something above and beyond unusual shapes and has become the byword for refined French taste. Le go?t Cartier, as it is known, describes a quiet, self-assured elegance that has no need to shout. If you are on the prowl for a time-only dress watch, sans testosterone-heavy looks, the Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat is a promising candidate. A lean 39mm stainless steel case, a simple dial with hallmark features of Cartier's watches and a price that won't elicit an oh l¨¤ l¨¤, could this Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat be the answer to your dress watch dreams?Editor's note: this review of the Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat is part one of a series of three articles where we will compare two elegant time-only watches currently on the market. Two watches with the same concept, but two different flavours.
IWC Adopts The Woodland Concept For Its Clever Pilot's Watch Timezoner TOP GUN
IWC Schaffhausen is well known for its pilot’s watches, its TOP GUN sub-collection and the use of ceramics. These three elements come together in the brand’s latest travel watch, the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner. The Timezoner, to keep it short, was introduced only a couple of years ago and is available as a pure travel watch or as a chronograph. IWC now adds a new style to the simpler of the two, the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner. Following the steel and blue ‘Le Petit Prince‘ and the all-black Ceratanium, this impressive wrist companion is presented in a TOP GUN Woodland forest-green ceramic execution, expanding the ‘Colours of TOP GUN‘ range. The formidable 46mm wide case is machined out of green ceramic, a material IWC has extensive experience with. The case is fitted with a black Ceratanium rotating bezel (and crown), but don’t mistake it for a diving bezel. Instead, pressing down on the bezel allows you to rotate it in both directions, wi
Longines Avigation BigEye Titanium Blue Dial (Specs & Price)
The?Avigation BigEye is one of those great Heritage Longines watches that pay tribute to the rich aviation past of the brand. Launched in 2017 in steel with a black dial, it was modelled after an elusive 1930s watch with quite a resemblance with some glorious post-WWII pilot’s chronograph too. Also, as indicated by its name, the watch was characterized by its oversized minute counter, a design also known as “Big Eye chronographs.” This year, in addition to the black dial model, Longines adds a new and striking version with a gradient blue dial and even stronger vintage colours. And, most importantly, it now comes in titanium.?BackgroundThe actual vintage Longines BigEye watch from the 1930s that inspired the design of the modern AvigationAs explained in our review of the steel model, the story behind the Avigation BigEye Chronograph is anything but clear. The design is based on a 1930s pilot’s chronograph that a collector presented to the Longines museum, but th
The devil is in the details... of the dial (case study with the Patek Philippe 5496P-015) - Monochrome Watches
You see, here at Monochrome-Watches, we always praise the complexity?of movements, we always emphasize on the amount of work done by watchmakers to assemble complications or to achieve a perfectly polished bevel, to finish?an internal angle or to obtain?black polishing – we even did a technical guide about it. We also look at “metiers d’art” – engraving, enameling, micro-painting. However, there’s one thing we tend to neglect?and that is actually much more important than we think: the dial. Yes, a dial can be very simple – most of them are actually painted plates with numerals and track printed. However, some dials can be proper demonstrations of art, showing microscopic elements finished with extreme care. People say that the devil is in the details… In the case of the?Patek Philippe 5496P-015, the devil is clearly in the dial. Why are we usually giving?our interest mainly on movements? It is simple. The movement of a watch is the beating
Five Watches Presented in 2021 Making Full Use of Luminescence - Monochrome Watches
Some watches shine brighter than others; we all know that. And that doesn't necessarily have to be attributed to copious amounts of gems or a superbly polished case. It can also be the result of the amount and application of luminescent material. And this, quite literally, can make a watch shine brighter than any diamond, especially at night! Here's our list of five watches presented in 2021 that put Super-LumiNova to good use!Bovet 1822 Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two ReimaginedIt might be considered an unlikely candidate for a Buying Guide, but Bovet is not a brand that shies away from the unconventional.
