Pre-Baselworld 2016 - The re-birth of the Girard Perregaux Laureato (2016 edition, ref. 81000) - Monochrome Watches
This year, the manufacture Girard-Perregaux, known for its impressive tourbillons (under three bridges or working on several axis), its?minute repeaters but also for the iconic 1966 collection, is celebrating its 225th anniversary. As you might expect (this is the rule in the watchmaking industry), the brand will come with several special watches dedicated to its?rich past. The first one we’re about to show you is rather surprising (and rather refreshing too) as it is not another 3 Gold Bridges watch but a throwback to the golden age of sports-watches, the 1970s. Here is the?re-birth of the Girard Perregaux Laureato with the 2016 edition, ref. 81000.The history of?the Girard Perregaux LaureatoAs you probably already spotted, the?Girard Perregaux Laureato has this rather unique 1970s shape, a mix of octagonal and round for the bezel, an integrated bracelet and a rather slim profile. This description might sound familiar and refers to several watches: the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak,
Hands-On - Ulysse Nardin Freak Out (Specs & price)
It all started in the early 1980s with the encounter of Rolf W. Schnyder, a visionary businessman and Ludwig Oeschlin, a brilliant horologist. The two men turned Ulysse Nardin, a century-old manufacturer, into one of the most innovative watch brands around. The most striking development brought to life by the duo is, without a doubt, the Freak (2001). This legendary timepiece was powered by a revolutionary in-line movement pivoting on itself to indicate the time. It was regulated by the cutting-edge dual direct escapement'. With the Freak, Ulysse Nardin not only became a pioneer of silicon (as such it is a true game-changer in the watch industry) but developed a concept like no other regarding design, display and technology.Ulysse Nardin has developed multiple variations of the concept (for example; Freak Phantom,?FreakLab and the 2018 Freak Vision Automatic) but, even after 17 years, the Freak still retains its bold, innovative and radical character. The idea behind the all-new Freak
Finding your new watch - Monochrome Watches
Sometimes a watch really grasps your attention and doesn’t let go. What is it that sets this watch apart from the rest? Is it the looks or maybe the brand’s name and fame appeals to you? Or did your father or favourite movie star had a watch that made a deep impression? Or maybe it is mainly about the technical aspects?Since the reason will be different for everyone and will probably even differ from watch to watch, I can only describe what made me want a watch from the Finnish watchmaker Sarpaneva. In my story at World Tempus I wrote about my decision to buy a special watch. But why this one and not any other watch. There are thousands of beautiful watches, so more than enough to choose from. One of my friends is crazy about a double straumann escapement, while i have just a vague idea of what makes this escapement differ from normal escapements. One of my other friends collects Cartier of the Collection Privee. And so do we all have a weak spot for something different. Fo
First Look: The Surprisingly Good Circula Facet
Circula might be a relatively new brand to some, as it was only revived in 2018. However, it was originally founded in 1955 by Heinz Huber, but what makes this different from most reboots is Cornelius Huber, the grandson of Heinz, who's behind the brand today. So, Circula is truly a family business and already has an extensive portfolio, but the new Facet, designed by Guy Bove, the former Creative Director of TAG Heuer, is its most mature piece to date. That certainly doesn't imply that prior models are in any way pedestrian as a bona fide super compressor diver sits in the mix of an impressive collection. Attention to detail, design sophistication and a new movement do elevate the Facet and show where Circula may be heading in the future. The stainless steel case is fairly compact at 38mm in diameter, fitting in with today's trend of smaller cases, and is primarily made up of angles/facets rather than curves. Starting with the brushed bezel, your eye is drawn to polished facets that cr
Hermes Arceau Brown Dial for Qatar Watch Club (Price)
Clubs of enthusiasts, whatever the passion people are sharing, have long existed and their influence is growing. More and more local initiatives are created, such as RedBar or, for today’s matters, the Qatar Watch Club. With the idea to generate passion and increase horological knowledge among their members, as well as offering watches made specifically for them, QWC is now presenting a new dedicated watch. Following a Tudor Pelagos and a Ulysse Nardin Freak X, it is time for something dressier, with the Hermes Arceau for “Qatar Watch Club.”This special edition for Qatari watch aficionados is based on one of the most classic designs of French brand Hermes, the Arceau – a watch with strong equestrian roots – designed in 1978 by Henri d’Origny. As with many creations by Hermes, the shape is unusual yet full of elegance. The watch for the QWC is based on the larger edition, the so-called TGM (tres grand modele), with a 40mm stainless steel case and the
