Omegas Gold Medal Olympic Timekeeping Equipment - Monochrome Watches
It's been touch and go since the outset of the pandemic, but the Tokyo 2020 Olympics finally reached the starting line on 23 July 2021, albeit a year late. Marking Omega's 29th time as Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, 400 tonnes of state-of-the-art equipment, 200km of cables and optical wire, 530 timekeepers and on-site professionals have been dispatched to Tokyo. The mission is to ensure that all 11,091 athletes taking part in the 339 events in 33 sports will benefit from precision timekeeping in events that are often secured by milliseconds that the human eye cannot detect. Timing has come a long way since Omega made its first official appearance in 1932 at the Los Angeles Olympics. Capitalising on the world's attention on the Tokyo Olympics, it's a good moment to review Omega's impressive contributions to the world of timekeeping, and in the same breath, acknowledge my indebtedness to Omega's comprehensive volume dedicated to its timekeeping breakthroughs in Great Olympic M
Cousteau and the Timepieces of the Calypso team - Part 2 - Monochrome Watches
Yesterday we gave a view into the world of diving watches, and specifically the very beginning (check it here). While today’s dive watches are mainly used for ‘desk-diving’ – as collectors refer to the wrist time that their dive watches get in the office – and hardly get in contact with the salty sea water that they are designed for, this category of watches remains very popular. However back in the 1950’s and 1960’s people like Jacques-Yves Cousteau did ground-breaking work researching and developing, together with a number of watch companies, the necessary properties?for dive watches. In those days, dive watches were life-saving tools; something that is in strong contrast with today’s main use of this category of watches. This morning we start with the actual watches that Cousteau and his team wore during the 1960’s. This afternoon we’ll tell you all about their watches in the 1970’s and 1980’s.?Lets Talk about W
Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Open Heart (Specs & Price)
Skeleton or openworked watches have always enjoyed certain popularity and range from anything ultra high-end to accessible watches. There’s something specifically appealing in discovering what’s beating inside a watch (even more for newcomers to mechanical watches), yet entirely opened dials can result in cluttered displays. For this reason, there’s a kind of watch that sits right in the middle, often referred to as “open heart” models, with only the brain of the watch exposed on the dial. Using the successful Gentleman Powermatic 80 as a base, Tissot is now releasing a new edition that does exactly that.?The Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80, a watch that we’ve extensively reviewed here and also filmed, can easily be considered one of the best offerings for an all-rounder, rather elegant and yet robust watch in the EUR sub-1000 category. Nicely proportioned and quite elegant overall for business use, resistant enough for the weekend too, very well equi
An Eye-Catching Green Dial For The Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle
As the oldest manufacture in continuous production, Vacheron Constantin has an unrivalled heritage and a devotion to Haute Horlogerie traditions passed down from the 18th century. The Traditionnelle family is, as its name indicates, the brand’s repository of timeless, traditional models. Luckily, Vacheron is also sensitive to trends and fuses conventional features with modern touches to produce elegant, contemporary classics. A case in point is the latest pink gold Traditionnelle Manual-Winding with a colourful green sunburst dial. Unveiled during the Shanghai edition of Watches & Wonders 2023, this Traditionnelle model will be reserved exclusively for the Chinese market for a month.Specific design features are intimately associated with the Traditionnelle family: round stepped case middle in precious metal with straight lugs, slender bezel and fluted caseback, railway-style minutes track, applied baton markers and elegant tapering Dauphine hands. Ranging from the most comple
