The all new IWC Portofino Chronograph 39 in Three Colours - Monochrome Watches
First introduced in 1984, the Portofino has been one of IWC's most popular collections, catering to both men and women. The design is timeless with an elegant round case and discreet dials. Available in several styles, from a classic three-hander to a complex monopusher chronograph, the Portofino came in several sizes. And today, seemingly out of nowhere and in the middle of the summer holidays, IWC launches a new diameter and new colours for the Portofino Chronograph.?The IWC Portofino collection has always revolved around clean, classically styled dress watches with uncluttered, simple yet handsome designs. The style of the Portofino has always been quite restrained. Sizes run from a petite 34mm to a quite masculine 45mm diameter, with the Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days, for instance. Hands-On Van Der Gang Original Calendar Chronograph Ref. 20052 (Specs & Price)
Making a name in the watch industry when you’re not Swiss and don’t have a 150-year pedigree isn’t an easy task. Apart from the usual quality and price aspects, the key is differentiation – which can lead to making things in an exaggerated way. Finding the balance between this need for being different and beautiful, elegant and timeless design will be salvation. Has Dutch brand Van Der Gang found this balance? We’ll try to find out with one of their classic offerings, the Original Calendar Chronograph Ref. 20052. (Spoiler… They did)Van Der Gang backgroundVan Der Gang watches was created by Wybe van de Gang, a Dutch entrepreneur. After finishing his education at the precision engineer school in Leiden in 1990, he established his own company: Exakt Fijnmechanika – an international player in the field of production techniques for the smallest possible parts, supplying products to the aviation, aerospace and medical industries. Atelier de Chronometrie AdC #1 and AdC #2 - As Hand-Made As Possible - Monochrome Watches
Hand-made… these two words are too often misused in the world of watches, but not so when talking about Beat Haldimann as we recently did, or when talking about Atelier de Chronometrie. The latter, a small independent watch brand from Barcelona, rebuilds or revives vintage Omegas, entirely by hand. Approximately a year ago, our managing editor Brice Goulard wrote about Atelier de Chronometrie and its (at that time) latest creation, the AdC #5. Today we’re taking a look at two similarly hand-made, rebuilt timepieces based on vintage Omega wristwatches from the 1950s, dubbed AdC #1 and AdC #2. Last year I was in Barcelona and I had a few hours in between meetings. Since I’d heard about the brand, I reached out to Atelier de Chronometrie and luckily they had time to see me. Meeting with Santiago Martinez and Montse Gimeno of the brand, a couple living and working in downtown Barcelona, was a huge pleasure. Santiago is the brand&
Rado True Square Open Heart Silver Highlights
Rado is synonymous with trendy design-led watches and high-tech ceramic, a material the brand has been playing with since the 1990s. Last year Rado introduced the True Square Automatic, a slinky, smooth, high-tech ceramic model with openworked and regular dials. For 2021, Rado introduces a subtle colour variation on the openworked model, now with silvery grey accents. All the other specifications are identical to the 2020 version.Square ceramic watchesThe Rado Ceramica of 1990 was the brand's first square watch made from high-tech ceramic. Its sleek geometry and minimalism established the aesthetic we associated with Rado's ceramic watches. In 1988, the Ceramica was treated to another derivation of ceramic known as high-tech plasma ceramic, and in 2016 industrial designer Konstantin Grcic re-imagined the Ceramica in stark matte grey and black ceramic. ?As a sibling of the Ceramica, the True Square is obviously square but attenuates the rigid geometry of the square case with gently roun
Video Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium Collection
Presented in 2019, the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 is an essential all-rounder, with the multi-purpose, versatile style needed for an everyday watch. Not too fancy or formal so it can be used on weekends, not too sporty either so it can be worn at the office. Modern yet classic, it might not be a particularly original design but, it is a very effective one.?And that makes it, alongside the attractive PRX collection, one of the best Tissot models now on offer.?The 40mm diameter and 11mm height of the case make the Tissot Gentleman relatively compact on the wrist. The sleek look, with a smooth polished bezel, adds to the robust feel of the watch, as well as its discretion. The case, as you would expect from Tissot, is well-executed, nicely decorated with a combination of brushed and polished surfaces, with an overall quality that is quite impressive given its price category. For instance, the side of the lugs is highlighted by a nice polished bevel, while the flanks are brushed. The w
