Independent Watchmaking - Artime and their ART01 Tourbillon
At MONOCHROME, we are always delighted to discover and present new watchmaking projects. So, when we learnt about the crew getting involved in the creation of a fresh high-end independent brand, it naturally caught our attention. Artime is the brainchild of a team of watchmaking experts in design, management, engineering, manufacturing and sales, bringing together a rather impressive wealth of expertise and experience. Meet their first opus, Artime ART01, with its transparent case and architectural calibre regulated by a twin-hairspring tourbillon.Artime was founded in 2021 in Les Brenets in the Swiss Jura mountains by six personalities not necessarily widely known by the public but bringing together a rather impressive wealth of expertise and experience. Didier Bretin, the ART01's movement designer, exerted his talents at Breguet, Audemars Piguet and Greubel Forsey. Fabrice Deschanel managed complication specialist and high-end movement manufacturer Renaud & Papi (now integrated i

Petrolhead Corner: The Upcoming APX GP F1 Movie
If you’ve been paying attention to Formula 1, you might have witnessed something odd over the past 12 months or so. While officially there are 10 teams putting two cars each on the grid, an eleventh team has been spotted! And no, it’s not Mario Andretti and his Cadillac-backed Formula 1 plans making an early appearance, nor is it Audi who’s taking over the Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, but it’s something different altogether. It’s Hollywood baby! But just who, how, what and where? I’m going to try and piece together the most important elements, but straight up; it involves a certain Mr Pitt and Mr Hamilton, the director from TOP GUN; Maverick, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team, and of course; IWC Schaffhausen! It was almost exactly a year ago, during the 2023 British Grand Prix, that we witnessed something never seen before in Formula 1. Apart from all the on- and off-track shenanigans of the 10 teams and 20 drivers battling it out for the Constru
Introducing the Ulysse Nardin Marine Diver Artemis Racing Limited Edition for the 35th Americas Cup - Monochrome-Watches
Ulysse Nardin, ostensibly a name synonymous with sailing, creates a limited edition Marine Diver to commemorate its partnership with Artemis racing. The previous America's Cup race had the growing pains of transitioning from the diminutive-by-comparison AC45 yachts to the staggering AC72 yachts (we featured the changes with Corum). The America's Cup 72 foot speed machine, which seems a misnomer to call a yacht, so we prefer a jet-aircraft-on-water, now comes standard with a solid carbon fiber sail, dual catamaran hull, and the finest in technological innovation. Oracle remains the team to beat, but as in life, competition calls for extraordinary effort, and Artemis, true to its name, returns to the hunt. Ulysse Nardin offers The Marine Diver Artemis Racing as a nautical instrument suitable for the herculean challenge of reaching sailing's most coveted trophy. The dive functionality of the watch is recognizable in its unidirectional bezel, which is notched with a wave edge for additional
Hands-on: The DIY Watch Club Bluing And Luming Kits
To many, watches are all about creating memories and lasting experiences. I still vividly remember where, when and how I bought one of my most precious watches, the Tudor Black Bay 79220N. It’s that connection that keeps me from ever selling it. But what if you wanted something more than just a ready-made product? What if you wanted some hands-on experience building a watch? Well, DIY Watch Club and its do-it-yourself watchmaking kits are just the thing for you. And along with its watch-building kits, the company also offers kits to heat-blue watch hands and even mix and apply lume to the hands and dial!About a year and a half ago, I detailed my personal build experience of a DIY Watch Club GMT Diver. Buying such a kit gets you everything you need, from the assembly tools to all the components and detailed instructions. With it, you are guided step by step to check the movement, install the hands, fit it inside the case, close it, and put a strap on it. Sounds straightforward eno
