We have put together some superb watches produced by Indie watchmakers, and we're only going to look at them through the caseback, movement side. For viewing pleasure exclusivelyThe list below gathers only ‘small’ independent watchmakers without mentioning larger brands such as Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Sohne or Audemars Piguet. Naturally, this isn’t an exhaustive list, so do not hesitate to mention your favourite craftsmen or watches in the comment section below!Akrivia Chronometre ContemporainRexhep Rexhepi ascent to become one of the rising stars of independent watchmaking is due largely to the splendour of his movements. A One-on-one Interview with an American Hero: Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger - Monochrome Watches
Heroes are giants – gods among us mere mortals. Heroes are larger-than-life figures who occupy the stratosphere, enjoying the view from mount Olympus as the twenty-four hour news channels immortalize them. In making their feats appear effortless, they gain our admiration, nay our devotion, and sometimes in feats of mythic proportion, our worship. Aviators have ascended this pedestal, and to the annals, which include such names as Charles Lindbergh (see here), we can add Captain Sully and include him in the pantheon of heroes. JEANRICHARD, however, would correct our hero misconceptions with their interpretation of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In this regard, Captain Sully is a perfect match for the brand. If the name Sully doesn’t immediately jog your memory, let me share the mental image of an airplane floating in the Hudson river with the aircraft intact and no casualties. From those images, the world learned that Captain Sullenberger piloted his disabled cra
The Longines A-7 Avigation: American Air Power - Monochrome Watches
In the early days of aviation, the military aviator's watch was an instrument of performance and precision. The US military had strict requirements for their Type A watches, and in 1934, specified an aircraft navigational chronograph from which derives the conjunction avigation: aviation and navigation. First issued between the World Wars, the US Army Air Corps Avigation Type A-7 Hack Watch was a pocket watch chronograph adapted for a wristwatch, making it a large accoutrement - perfect for navigation.?Think of it as an American equivalent to the German B-Uhr Fliegers – only with a chronograph – or the French Type 20 (see our article about Type 20 watches here). Ad - Scroll to continue with article The American Type A-7 were supplied by Gallet (white dial), Meylon and Longines. Vintage A-7s are rare, however Longines has made it easy to own one by re
Weekly Watch Photo - Gronefeld One Hertz Techniek Nocturne - Monochrome Watches
After more then two years of Weekly Watch Photos, we’re now at the 118’s edition of Monochrome’s Weekly Watch Photo. And to celebrate the new design of Monochrome, we go entirely Dutch. Monochrome’s Dutch roots combined with the Dutch watch brand Gronefeld – you know we love the One Hertz – and a Dutch photographer who specialized in watch photos, Bert Buijsrogge. Sounds like a great mix, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.?Bert’s photos have been featured here before. Just think of the excellent photos he made of the Hautlence HL Ti-02 and the photos he used for his Watch Calendar, like these or these?or this one. Besides being a very skilled photographer, Bert also knows how to present watches. He always presents a watch in a certain atmosphere, that always perfectly matches that particular watch. Gronefeld’s latest creation, the One Hertz Techniek Nocturne, is photographed in dark Gotham City like spheres…. Ad
Montblanc Introduces the ExoTourbillon Rattrapante - Monochrome Watches
The Watches and Wonders watch fair in Hong Kong has inspired several watch brands to introduce rather impressive new timepieces. And when we say “new” , we really mean new, not just a visual touch-up. Montblanc has really outdone themselves and introduce THE new pinnacle in mechanical chronographs, the ExoTourbillon Rattrapante. The ExoTourbillon was already a pinnacle for tourbillon watches, with its brilliant construction that allows a huge balance wheel, much larger than any other tourbillon, to rotate outside the tourbillon cage and a smaller hair spring inside the rotating cage. This construction has the advantage of the large balance wheel, being stability in chronometric rate, while it also has the advantages of a tourbillon in not being influenced by gravities forces. The Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858 comprises all things beautiful from the old Minerva manufacture and this new ExoTourbillon Rattrapante is the perfect example of that. Just look at the elegantly s
