Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph 25th Anniversary 26421 - Review (Price)
As we told you in a recent article, next year will be the 25th anniversary of a modern icon, a watch that simply created the trend for bold sports-luxury watches: the?Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore. In 1993, the brand impressed (or shocked) the industry with this watch, and to celebrate this, AP has some commemorative pieces to mark the occasion. The first one looks at the past, being a re-edition of the first ROO. The second one, which goes under our loupe today, looks towards the future. Aggressive, impressive, complex, architectural… Here is the bold (to say the least)?Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph 25th Anniversary. On one side of the range, Audemars Piguet looks at the past. Indeed, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Royal Oak Offshore (as a reminder, launched at Baselworld 1993), the brand has revealed a vintage-inspired version of this modern icon, a 1:1 re-edition of the very first ROO, with chronograph and blue guilloche dial. Auction - Unique Roger W. Smith Series 1 by A Collected Man
Over the years, A Collected Man (or ACM), a watch curator based in London, has become one of the finest destinations for everything high-end independent watchmaking. For instance, they’ve been able to sell a 7 million Philippe Dufour Grande et Petite Sonnerie, or a simple yet tastefully-designed Baltic watch. Their business has recently expanded to online auctions, and the latest to appear is rather special and is exclusively focused on a single watch. And the watch in question is exceptional, being a unique, specifically commissioned Roger W. Smith Series 1. A monument of British watchmaking that will also benefit a good cause. If ACM has earned a reputation for the quality of the watches offered for sale, Roger W. Smith is without a doubt amongst the most important and talented watchmakers to perform this art on British soil. The sole apprentice to the late Dr George Daniels, leading him to master the 34 skills that comprise the Daniels Method, Smith eventually transitioned from
A Technical Perspective - The Key Features of a Pilot's Watch
If there is an official standard defining the features for a watch suitable for diving (ISO 6425), no such definition or standard exists (at least one that would be used throughout the industry) for another popular watch category: the pilot's watch. Each and every brand has its own vision of what a pilot's watch should be, depending on the needs of the wearer. However, there are some key elements that single these watches out from the crowd.Pilot’s watches are extremely popular, appreciated for their utilitarian aesthetics and sharp legibility. Positioned more as statement pieces today than the vital tool watches originally used in the air, pilot’s watches, like dive watches, were born from necessity. The first pilot's watch is often considered to be the wristwatch created by Louis Cartier for dandy aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont to time his flights. Its technical specifications were basic, far from those of military watches of the mid-20th?century, which have shaped the des
Introducing: The Return of the Triton Spirotechnique Dive Watch
While the Submariner, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and Omega Seamaster ruled the 1950s enthusiast and military diving scene, it was the Triton Spirotechnique in 1963 that briefly became the most expensive dive watch of its times, although never the best known. It was developed for the Spirotechnique company (Aqualung), founded by oceanographer/filmmaker/French naval officer Jacques Cousteau in 1946, and was used by both American and French navy divers. Like many watchmakers, the brand didn't survive the Quartz Crisis in the 1970s, but was revived in 2015 by a pair of watch enthusiasts.?The Triton Spirotechnique Classic Black (applied markers)The original Triton Spirotechnique was developed by a retired French Air Force colonel, Jean Rene Parmentier, who developed the protected (and patented) 12 o'clock crown system, shrouded by an articulating lug. The watch was manufactured in France by Dodane and sold in Spirotechnique dive shops (now named Aqualung) alongside professional diving equipm
