Xavier Markl's Top 10 of the SIHH 2017
The SIHH 2017 was my 19th attendance to the Geneva-based fair. What a pleasure to tour the inescapable Geneva Haute Horlogerie rendez-vous, which has been great vintage indeed! Here's my top ten favorite watches, after over 2,000 pictures shot. These are presented without specific order, focusing on gents watches (no mention therefore of the magnificent jeweled watches from Cartier, Piaget or Van Cleef and Arpels). A tough choice but as we had to pick ten, here we go with my personal highlightsGreubel Forsey Grande SonnerieThe grande sonnerie and petite sonnerie hold a special place in the world of Haute Horlogerie. There is only a handful of watchmakers capable of manufacturing such works of arts, often regarded as the ultimate horological complication. Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey are adding a 24-second inclined tourbillon to their impressive Grande Sonnerie. The power-hungry strike-work mechanism is powered by its one barrel wound by a micro-rotor to fulfill its function for lo
Ferdinand Berthoud Chronometre FB 1L, An Instrument of Astronomical Complexity - Monochrome Watches
The latest “experimental collection” unveiled by Ferdinand Berthoud during Baselworld 2019 unites the findings of two pivotal scientific minds of the Enlightenment. Closer in nature to an instrument than a watch, two limited editions of 10 pieces celebrate the genius of pioneers Ferdinand Berthoud and Jean-Charles de Borda, men whose discoveries and quest for chronometric precision and the calculation of longitude changed the course of history and gave France's Navy sway of the seven seas. This year, the Chronometre FB 1 with its in-house tourbillon movement and constant force escapement incorporates the age and phases of the Moon to become the Chronometre FB 1L (L for lune, French for moon). A fusion of astronomic and chronometric precision, the FB 1L represents the breakthrough scientific projects that helped determine longitude at sea with ever-increasing accuracy three centuries ago.Expanding the Chronometre FB 1 FleetJust ahead of the Baselworld launch, Brice introduce
The intricate Gimbutis Avantgarde Pinecone Skeleton
Our environment can give birth to fascinating concepts, and designers have been inspired by nature for centuries. This is also the case for the Signature design of Gimbutis (a jewellery/watch brand founded by Romas Gimbutis). It is inspired by the pine cone that, like many plants, illustrates the Fibonacci sequence or golden ratio in its structure. Curvy lines and three-dimensional seed scale patterns combine to create a modern, non-conformist artistic expression. Building on the success of the brand’s pinecone jewellery, Gimbutis has now launched a selection of watches and today we are taking a look at the Avantgarde Pinecone Skeleton in white gold. The first thing to grab your attention with the Gimbutis Avantgarde is its extroverted, non-conformist design. Subconsciously symmetric and organic, its tonneau shape case stands out with soft curves, dramatic arcs, and, most importantly, a distinctive three-dimensional surface inspired by the pine cone seed scale. Measuring 42.65mm x
