Patek Philippe 175 auction by Christie's - Results and analysis - Monochrome-Watches
That’s it! The Christie’s auction for Patek Philippe 175th Anniversary is done and well done. With a total amount of CHF 19,367,000 (around EUR 16,100,000 or USD 20,000,000) for 100 lots, we’re in front of quite a serious amount (an average of 190,000 CHF per lot). We introduced to you the highlights of the sale a few weeks ago and we were impressed by the selection. It is now time for us to see the results of the auction’s highlights and of a few others watches that might be interesting. If you take a look at the catalog and the results, you’ll notice that most of the lots had been sold at prices higher than the estimates. Some of them, such as lots 83, 78 or 44 even doubled the estimate. It especially true for the ‘cheapest‘ lots. We also had some surprises, such as lot?39, certainly one of the most expansive 3-hand watches?ever sold or lot 89 that reached and incredible price for a vintage Patek Philippe Nautilus. We’ll get back on thes
Introducing: Steel-and-Gold and Gradient Dials for the Longines Spirit Flyback
Presented last year by Longines as the flagship model in its recent pilot-oriented collection, the Spirit Flyback paid tribute to an important function for the brand, the retour-en-vol chronograph. While the authorship of the flyback complication is a topic that is still discussed, the winged hourglass brand produced its first model equipped with a flyback function in 1925, then filed a patent which was registered on 16 June 1936. As the top of the range model in the Spirit collection, this large and higher-end chronograph now comes back in two warm and luxurious versions, mixing steel and gold, with green or brown tones.?Just like the?Spirit Zulu Time has to be seen as the bigger brother of the classic 3-hand models, the same could be said about the Spirit Flyback next to the classic automatic chronograph. A sportier take on the brand’s vision of a classic, highly precise pilot’s watch, this 42mm model features an external rotating bezel, something that the classic chronog
In Memory of Sir Stirling Moss, Legendary Racing Driver - And Wearer of Great Watches
Yesterday, Sir Stirling Moss passed away at the age of 90. Born 17 September 1929 in London, Moss was a legendary Formula 1 driver who won a total 212 of the 529 races he entered across various racing categories. He finished runner-up in the Formula 1 World Championship four times and third place three times all in a seven-year period from 1955 to 1961. He is considered “the greatest Formula 1 driver never to win the world championship”. He retired from active racing after an accident in 1962. He crashed his Lotus at Goodwood, put him in a coma for a month and for six months the left side of his body was partially paralyzed.A portrait of Stirling Moss, circa 1955. Photo by Klemantaski Collection/Getty ImagesAmongst his famous wins are the 1954 edition of the 12 Hours of Sebring with American co-driver Bill Lloyd, where Moss became the first non-American to win the race. In 1955, Stirling Moss won the Targa Florio with British co-driver Peter Collins. In the same year, Moss
