Lange & Sohne Pour le Merite - An interview about Honouring Fine Watchmaking - Monochrome Watches
The Lange & Sohne Pour le Merite Collection is a pinnacle in fine watchmaking. Our friend Peter Chong, who featured here on Monochrome on many ocassions, wrote a book about the very best watches coming from Saxony, Germany. Friend of Monochrome, Peter Nievaart, interviewed Peter Chong about his passion for A. Lange & Sohne and the book he wrote in honor of the Pour le Merite Collection. Peter Nievaart in conversation with Peter Chong….Pour le Merite book - photo by Edwin HeusinkveldLast Christmas I received a truly remarkable book about the Pour le Merite collection of A. Lange & Sohne, written by Peter Chong. It is not just a book about watches. It a tribute to fine watchmaking in Glashutte with a monumental size of 42 by 30 centimeters. The book contains many A3 and A2 sized photos of various details, including finishing and the servicing of a Tourbillon Pour le Merite. The size and the quality of the photos provide a unique view on the fine parts of a watch movemen
Baselworld 2019 - Tudor Black Bay Chrono S&G 79363N (Hands-On, Specs & Price)
When Tudor first introduced its Black Bay Chrono model in 2017, there was a hullabaloo about incorporating chronograph functions on board a 200m water-resistant vintage-inspired dive watch. A diver without a rotating bezel replaced by a fixed tachymeter scale for the chronograph functions? For many, the combination of functions was unwarranted but over time, the initial animosity was replaced by enthusiasm. For 2019, the Black Bay Chrono is back in a 41mm bold two-tone steel and gold model with a host of bracelet and strap choices. The Midas TouchThe steel and gold case is by no means a novelty; Frank reviewed the Black Bay S&G model two years ago and predicted the unexpected return to two-tone case combinations. Following suit, the 41mm steel case of the new Black Bay Chrono S&G model is spruced up with yellow gold pushers (screwed to ensure the 200m water-resistance) along with a fixed (non-rotating) bezel in yellow gold with a black anodised aluminium insert for the tachymetr
Five Super-Stylish Dress Watches To Get You Through Gloomy Days
Subtlety, refinement and elegance in watchmaking is an art form in itself. It’s very easy to overdo it and end up with a watch that is just a bit, well, off. Then again, delivering a discerning little twist to an otherwise super-refined watch can work absolutely wonderfully. Incorporating a certain dial colour, pattern, or even material can truly elevate a watch. And it doesn’t even have to cost a literal fortune, as this episode of our weekly Buying Guide starts below EUR 2,000. With that in mind, we’re taking a closer look at five dress(y) watches that are destined to become favourites among enthusiasts and collections.?Vacheron Constantin TraditionNelleAs the oldest manufacture in continuous production, Vacheron Constantin has a long history of elegant dress watches. The aptly named Traditionnelle collection, for instance, is home to plenty of gorgeous examples, such as this rose gold and green one released during the Shanghai Edition of Watches & Wonders 2023.
The Cheapest High End watch - Monochrome Watches
Con artist make their living with it; the deep, burning human desire to get something for nothing. When dealing with a con artist, you usually end up with nothing for something, but that does not take away from the fact that we all love to get a good deal on something, ending up with a higher value then we actually paid for. Therefore, in this quest we are going to look for the cheapest, high-end watch there is in today's market. Before we can depart, we first must have a pretty good idea what a high-end watch actually is. While in some opinions, no watch is truly high end unless it features a perpetual calendar of course equipped with a minute repeater and two cathedral gongs, powered by a mechanical movement, with a tourbillion for that extra bit of accuracy, and you definitely cannot go without a sky chart on the back of the watch (how else would you be able find your way home?) that also should display orbit and phase of the moon. Well, then you'll probably also find the Patek Phili
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface Fagliano Burgundy
The Reverso is a watch of rare longevity. In fact, it is probably one of the watch models with the longest track record. The Reverso was created back in 1931 and since then, its unique concept of a reversible and protective case has been one of the pillars of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s success. As the Reverso approaches its 90th anniversary in 2021, the brand is bound to release several important new models. But before that, Jaeger-LeCoultre treats us to a reinterpretation of a classic, with the Reverso Tribute Duoface Fagliano Limited in a striking combination of pink gold and burgundy red.As Rebecca explained in a previous article on this icon of the watch industry: “The Reverso was LeCoultre's ingenious response to a request from British colonial army officers stationed in India. As keen polo players, they were constantly smashing the glass on their watches and jeopardizing the mechanism of their wristwatches during the brutal matches. In 1931, LeCoultre patented its reversible
