Introducing the Nomos Neomatik First Edition, including champagne dials & DUW 3001 Calibre (specs & price) - Monochrome-Watches
Remember, a few days after Baselworld 2015, we showed a preview of the new Nomos Minimatik, a brand new design from the Glashutte-based manufacture but mainly a completely new movement, the in-house, ultra-slim, self-winding DUW 3001. We’ve been surprised to see such an achievement from a quite young brand (not so young anymore with?25 yeas of existence) and such a price (below €3,000)… What we didn’t know was?that this movement is now the starting point of a new collection, the Nomos Neomatik First Edition (based 5 watches from the brand: Tangente, Orion, Ludwig, Metro & Minimatik) that standardize the DUW 3001 and brings champagne dials.Reminder about the Calibre DUW 3001The Nomos Calibre DUW 3001 is a flat movement – a very flat one indeed. And it’s an fully in-house movement, with self-winding mechanism. It’s not the first manufacture?movement from the brand, as they already have in stock the?complicated automatic calibre Epsilon that can be
Buying Guide - Best of Independent Watchmaking in 2022
At MONOCHROME, we love watches, watchmaking and the watchmaking industry as a whole. However, we can’t hide our passion for watches manufactured by small ateliers by watchmakers who create watches with their hands and soul. Known as “independent watchmaking“, these creative hubs provide a breath of fresh air to established brands. We continue our recap of the best watches launched in 2022, following the best chronographs, the best pilot’s watches and the best accessible timepieces. It is now time to take a look at what we think were the most impressive models released by indie watchmakers this year… And believe us, it wasn’t easy to come up with this selection!Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance New GenerationThe concept of resonance has long been the dream of watchmakers and physicists, which has proven to be extremely difficult to materialise. Many have tried to introduce resonance inside a clock, pocket watch or wristwatch, with irregular results
The Design Argument - Why Giuliano Mazzuoli Still Stands out From the Crowd? - Monochrome Watches
As Bernie Ecclestone already taught us with his infamous black-eyed Hublot-advertisements, owning very desirable watches does come with some risks. Giuliano Mazzuoli knows that better than anyone else. UnfortunatelyFrom a robbery to Crowe's and Sheeran's wristsWhen Giuliano Mazzuoli entered his workshops on the early morning on Sunday, May 12, the Italian watchmaker encountered a nightmare. I noticed that strangely a door was open, Mazzuoli writes. Inside everything seemed in order, but there was a kind of rod on the floor that was about three or four meters long made of strips of plastic that were joined together with adhesive tape that drew my attention. I didn't know who could have made this and what it was supposed to be for. The rod wasn't too far from the entry door to the room where the safe is located which was closed but the alarm system was off.His spokesman doesn't want to go in too much detail about the robbery, but Mazzuoli goes on in telling detail. I became suspicious. I
A Technical Perspective - The Omega Co-Axial Escapement Fully Explained
The idea sprouted some 40 years ago?in the genius mind of a British master craftsman, who worked his way up to become one of the greatest watchmakers of the 20th century. Following numerous attempts to find an escapement that would perform better than the century-old lever escapement, George Daniels eventually designed the “Co-Axial” escapement. This superlative escapement is now at the heart of the vast majority of Omega's watches and a key element in meeting the remarkable quality requirements set by the brand, including the Master Chronometer certification.George Daniels’ co-axial escapement drawingThe escapement is without doubt one of the most critical parts of a watch, the brain of the movement if you will, although some consider it the heart. It is the device that determines at what speed the energy from the mainspring is released. It works in conjunction with the oscillator, giving impulses to power it. In return, it is regulated by the oscillator. Its role is
TAG Heuer Appoints Alec Monopoly As Art Provocateur & J.C. Biver explains us why
A few days ago, right from the Miami Contemporary Art week, TAG Heuer and its CEO, Jean-Claude Biver (also President of the LVMH Watch Division), announced the appointment of American street-artist Alec Monopoly as Art Provocateur for the Avant-Garde brand. Well, as you may have seen already (it was all over social medial feeds), some reacted quite?fiercely to this announcement, judging the collaboration rather irrelevant. However, we were there and we took the time to sit down with Mister Biver and Alec Monopoly, to understand what was behind this appointment. And we can tell you that first, it’s far from being a stupid idea, then it’s a real first in the industry and finally, it’s a great idea for an industry that faces a lack of creativity.Who’s Alec Monopoly? Alec is a famous street-artist (while usually a rather underground field of art, he is well-known, at least in this sector), born in New-York, now based in California and in his thirties – ps. don
