A one-of-two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe breaks records
In the world of classic cars, there's expensive and then there's Ferrari-expensive. Or at least, there was Ferrari-expensive because as of now it seems that a 1956 Mercedes-Benz has set the new all-time record for the most expensive car in the world. Where in the what, who and how has this happened? Well, Mercedes-Benz themselves have apparently sold one of only two 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupes ever made, both still in existence and owned by the company itself until now, for a monumental 135 MILLION euros. Take that, Ferrari! If you go through the list of most expensive cars ever sold, directly from one owner to the next or through auctions, multiple records have been set in the past 8 or 9 years. As prices from classic cars have skyrocketed, there's one brand that pretty much dominates, and that's of course none other than Ferrari. Out of the 11 most expensive cars listed by Hagerty, only 4 are not by the fabled Italian carmaker, including the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe we’
Hands-On - TAG Heuer Monaco 1969-1979 Limited Edition 50th-Anniversary CAW211V.FC6466 (Specs & Price)
Even after a half-century of life, the TAG Heuer Monaco is still one of the most iconic chronographs on the market. The fame of the Monaco owes much to its cameo role on the wrist of Steve McQueen in the 1971 movie Le Mans. Back then, McQueen was known as The King of Cool. At the height of his popularity, his performance as racer Michael Delaney is, without doubt, one of his most cult roles. Although the Monaco shot to fame on Steve McQueen’s wrist, the genesis of this unconventional square chronograph coincided with a genuine technological revolution (and a frantic race) to launch the world’s first automatic chronograph.Steve McQueen wearing his Heuer Monaco in the movie Le Mans, 1971Short history of the Heuer MonacoThe 1960s and 1970s were a golden age for motor racing, one of the most exciting (and dangerous) sports of the time. The period was also the heyday of the mechanical chronograph with the birth of a number of horological icons. Back then, before electronic race
Hands-on: The New Salmon Dial Chopard Alpine Eagle XPS
Chopard introduced the Alpine Eagle collection in 2019 to compete in the growing segment of luxury sports watches with integrated bracelets. A modern interpretation of Chopard’s St. Moritz line from the 1980s, the Alpine Eagle, viewed by many as an attempt to create a genuine alternative to Royal Oak and Nautilus, became an essential part of Chopard’s offer as the collection has grown and is now an array of references in different sizes, materials and includes a flyback chronograph, a flying tourbillon, and a watch with a high-frequency (57,600vph/8Hz) movement, not to mention time-only, time and date, and references richly decorated with precious stones. This year the brand presents an ultra-thin Alpine Eagle model in a 41mm case with a thickness of just 8mm.The case of the Alpine Eagle 41 XPS has a familiar shape, distinguishing flanks and a bezel with eight proper screws and an engraved crown. For balanced proportions in line with the slim profile, the sides of the bezel
Hands-On: Ready for the Olympics, The Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024
The 2024 Paris Olympics, which will start later this week, mark 92 years of Omega‘s legacy as the official timekeeper for the Games. Since 1932 and for the 31st time, the Omega Timing team, with its unparalleled expertise, extensive personnel, and tons of equipment, will support the competing athletes. To truly grasp the extent of Omega’s involvement and the cutting-edge technology they bring to the table in 2024, I urge you to delve into “the insane technology behind the timekeeping role,” as detailed by Frank Geleen earlier this month. This technology, including a Quantum Timer with a resolution of one-millionth of a second, might seem far removed from modern mechanical chronographs. Still, the connection to sports timing remains clear and exhilarating.Omega track and field starting blocks with built-in sensorsThis brings us to the new and exciting Paris Olympics 2024 versions of the Speedmaster Chronoscope. Weekly Watch Photo - Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle Chronograph Paris Boutique - Monochrome Watches
The summer is coming, or at least that’s the feeling that I get from the few lovely warm and sunny days, that we enjoyed over the past weeks. OK, the number of rainy, windy, and cold days still outnumber the nice days, but after a very long and miserable winter it feels like a step in the right direction. And when I think of the summer I think of the sunny beaches in the south of France, enjoying a glass of wine on a terrace in small town in Burgundy, or strolling the streets of Paris with my girlfriend. That reminds me of the new must-visit place in the French capitol, located at 2 Rue de la Paix. This is the address of Vacheron Constantin’s new boutique (we showed you the dedicated website and stunning B&W photos here) and to celebrate this, Vacheron introduced four limited editions of the Patrimony Traditionnelle collection, which all feature a stunning?hand-guilloche opaline silver-toned dial.
