The 2021 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Green Collection
The colour green might be the latest trend in watchmaking and even refer back to Audemars Piguet’s groovy colourful stone dials of the 1970s, but it has another far more interesting connotation that ties in very nicely with the iconic Royal Oak watch. Green is also evocative of the evergreen or perennial trees that grow in the forests around Le Brassus, home to Audemars Piguet’s manufacture and headquarters. The adjectives ‘evergreen’ and ‘perennial’ also work very well in the context of the enduring appeal of the Royal Oak since it was introduced in 1972. For 2021, Audemars Piguet enlivens several members of its Royal Oak family with vibrant green dials, including a limited edition Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph in a luxurious yellow gold case and three new Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon models in pink gold or titanium and one version set with bright green emeralds in the bezel. Baume HRS Limited Edition Automatic - When Richemont goes Microbrand-Like - Monochrome Watches
When you hear the word Baume, most would assume it's referring to Baume & Mercier, a popular luxury watch brand dating back to 1830 and now part of the Richemont Group. And they'd be partially correct. Baume is an offshoot of Baume & Mercier with Marie Chassot (Product Marketing Director for Baume & Mercier) coming in as the lead, along with several other executives from the parent company. Baume is, however, very much an independent company with different design philosophies and strategic guidance, and a strong focus on sustainability. Baume might be an entry-level brand among Richemont's more prestigious (and expensive) offerings, but there's a lot to like about its deep level of customization and a couple of special edition models. The one I'm reviewing today is its flagship HRS Limited Edition Automatic, a limited production regulator model with an interesting take on recycling. Baume calls it upcycling and its wooden case is made from a used skateboard deck, while the
Basel news: Chopard - Monochrome Watches
Chopard Elton John CollectionChopard released no less than 6 new watches in the weeks before Baselworld. For me only 2 of the 6 are interesting, as the other 4 are ladies models. Although… one of the ladies models really jumps out, because it’s made for a man. the Chopard Elton John Collection. ICE, ICE, BABY… that’s some serious bling-bling. Luckily (for me) Chopard also releases two?very interesting watches. The first is the new L.U.C Twist that will be available in 18ct rose or white gold. The white gold model has a black dial and white gold dauphine hands, the rose gold model come with a silver dial and rose gold hands. The 41 mm case, 10 mm thick, is water resistance to 30 meters and has two saphire crystals (front and back). This classic dress watch has a not so classic size and crown position; 41 mm being relatively large and the crown is positioned at 4 o’clock. It comes on a hand-sewn brown or black alligator leather with a pin buckle in matching
IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide IW344001 (Price)
The IWC Portugieser was born in 1939 following a request from two Portuguese navigators and businessmen – Rodrigues and Teixeira – who wanted the precision of a marine chronometer in a wristwatch format. No need to say that this iconic IWC collection has strong ties to the nautical world. And to celebrate these roots, IWC is unveiling a new model today with an unprecedented complication that couldn’t be more appropriate: a tide indication. Encased in a sporty and large case, meet the new IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide.?Introduced in 2010, the IWC Portugieser Yacht Club is a sports model in this rather elegant collection, with its nautical, yachting, regatta-ready note. More robust, larger, a bit more rugged and bulky, it has mostly favoured one complication until now, the chronograph – a world timer has also been available in the past. A versatile watch, capable of timing a sailing race but also at ease with a drink at the marina. In addition to the
Buying Guide - 6 recently revived brands and watches
One of the most popular categories of watches in recent years is the revival watch. Bringing back a historic model and paying tribute in a very faithful manner can result in truly cool watches. And it’s not something done only by mainstream manufacturers like Longines or Tissot, but also by smaller, lesser-known manufacturers. And it becomes even better if a re-edition of a watch comes in the form of a completely revived brand. We all know the quartz-crises wreaked havoc in the watch industry in the 1970s and 1980s, causing many brands to go defunct or dormant, including some of the names listed today. But with the rise of the revival watch, some of these names have made a glorious return. With that in mind, lets take a look at 6 of the coolest revived names and watches.Aquastar Deepstar 39First up is Aquastar, a brand that originated in the early 1960s and was revived a couple of years ago. Aquastar was initially relaunched with the Deepstar Chronograph, a chunky diving watch of
