Introducing: Haute-Rive Debuts With The Honoris And A 1000-Hour Power Reserve Movement
Although his name might not ring a bell, Stephane Von Gunten has a long track record in the industry. After a couple of years with Patek Philippe, this watchmaking engineer has spent most of his career with Ulysse Nardin to become its R&D Director Quite a background, given the brand's propensity for innovation. There, he was involved with filing no fewer than 30 patents. Now in his mid-forties, Von Gunten is launching his own brand, Haute-Rive and his first watch, the Honoris, a watch boasting an impressive 1000-hour power reserve. Proud to represent the fifth generation of a family of watchmakers, Stephane Von Gunten chose the name Haute-Rive because it was the name of the workshop of his great-great-grandfather, Irene Aubry. The name of the model itself, Honoris, was chosen as a tribute to one of his ancestor's creations patented in 1889, a pocket watch with 8 days of power reserve, known as the Hebdomas.?More often than not, the choice of a watch is not entirely about its utilit
A. Lange and Sohne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar 25th Anniversary (Specs & Price)
The Lange 1 “25th Anniversary”, introduced prior to the SIHH 2019, was the first of a commemorative series of ten watches. Two other limited edition pieces followed, with the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase?and the Little Lange 1. For the fourth model in the collection, A. Lange & Sohne introduces the most complicated and exclusive model of this watch family. Meet the 25-piece A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar “25th Anniversary”.The recipe for this fourth watch is pretty simple: take the most complex Lange 1 model, adapt it to the 25th-anniversary theme and you’ll get a very discreet watch (at first) that hides an incredible level of sophistication. The base for this new edition is familiar and avails itself of the same proportions and movement as this version we reviewed a few years ago. Needless to say, we’re in front of one of Lange’s masterpieces here. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
Hands-On Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Limited Edition
Fusing two of the brand’s fortes - a popular vintage dive watch design and innovative high-tech ceramic - Rado has come up with a winner. The latest edition of the Captain Cook flaunts a sleek matte black ceramic case, and for the first time, even the bezel and crown are crafted in ceramic. The watch is also equipped with a new movement with an airy openworked design that can be seen from the dial, complete with a new golden train bridge. Limited to 1,962 pieces in honour of the year the Captain Cook made its maiden voyage, this ‘noir’ take of the diver is a contemporary, stylish proposal.Material MattersFounded by the Schlup brothers and known initially as Schlup & Co, the company started as a movement manufacturer based in Lengnau, Switzerland, to become one of the largest producers of watch movements by the mid-1940s. The name Rado didn’t appear on a watch until 1957 with the Golden Horse, but the brand’s reputation as a severe materials innovator k
Hands-On - Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 40mm Oxblood Red Dial (Specs & Price)
Oris expands its Big Crown Pointer Date collection with the incorporation of this model with an oxblood dial. An unusual colour that is rarely seen in watchmaking, we think it works extremely well in this context. The technical specifications, the styling of the 40mm steel model and even the price have not altered, but the intense, dark red dial proves that there is plenty of room for a bolder colour palette in the iconic Big Crown Pointer Date family.BackgroundLately, we've been covering a lot of Oris dive watches on MONOCHROME, in particular, the Aquis and Sixty-Five models, which are the stars of 2019. Well before Oris produced its first dive watch in 1965, the Swiss brand had made a name for itself with its Big Crown pilot's wristwatch of 1938. Fitted with an oversized crown for pilots to manipulate without having to remove their gloves, another key trait was the original date complication. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
Baselworld 2019 - Oris Great Barrier Reef III Limited Edition (Specs & Price)
Protecting the oceans, as well as water (and everything living in it) in general, has become a recurring goal for Oris, with frequent launches of limited editions of its dive watches linked to a good cause – think Aquis Date Relief, ‘Source of Life’ Limited Edition or Clipperton Limited Edition. Following its tradition of adding new colours and new complications to its signature Aquis dive watch,? and as part of the Baselworld 2019 collection, the brand introduces the Oris Great Barrier Reef III Limited Edition.?Restoring the reefAs suggested by its name, the Oris Great Barrier Reef III Limited Edition is the third watch (see the second model here) Oris has linked to the world's largest and most diverse reef system (so big – 2,600km long – it can be seen from space) but since 2015 and the second model in the series, the situation has far from improved. In fact, it's got worse. Two hot summers in 2016 and 2017 led to a series of coral bleaching events leavi
