Collector's Corner - The iconic Cartier Tank Americaine
We've spent quite a lot of time talking about sports watches in The Collector's Corner. In the last article, we took a look at the Breguet Type XX, but now we head back to the realm of the dress watch. No more dress complications this time - we've had quite a few of those already (both from JLC and from Breguet). No, now we talk about the pinnacle of the dress watch: time-only, and what better way to highlight this than to talk about a watch made by Cartier? The jewellery house excels in unconventional and daring designs, and though many of their most iconic watch case shapes date back to the first half of the 20th century, our subject today is the spring chicken of the bunch.Cartier's iconic rectangular wristwatch, the Tank, was born in 1917 and said to be inspired by the stark lines of Renault FT-17 tanks. In the decades since, the Tank design was iterated on but the focus always lay on elegance and on pushing the boundaries of case shapes (Tank Chinoise or Asymetrique, anyone?). Ind
IWC Big Pilot's Watch Big Date Bucherer BLUE IW5105 Introducing, Price
A little over two years ago, MONOCHROME covered the?Portugieser Chronograph Classic Bucherer BLUE – a red gold model with a blue dial, but other than that, an identical base design of IWC Schaffhausen's Ref. 3904 made in 2013. Fast-forward to last year and we reviewed the IWC Portugieser Chronograph Bucherer BLUE, another collaborative effort between the Swiss watchmaker and the world's largest watch retailer. To mark its fourth anniversary with the aviation watch specialist, Bucherer launches a timepiece that draws from IWC's Big Pilot's Watch collection for the very first time. Of course, it also features Bucherer's signature blue colour on its dial. The IWC Big Pilot's Watch Big Date Bucherer BLUE, limited to just 100 pieces worldwide, is also the first partnership edition to feature a big date complication on its dial. This new IWC Big Pilot's Watch should certainly appeal to collectors of Bucherer's BLUE lifestyle collection (which has celebrated partnering with some of the w
Hamilton PSR Re-Edition Hamilton Pulsar First Digital Watch
The 1970s was a decade of revolutions. The world made huge strides creating some of the most impactful inventions coupled with striking designs. Well, if you are 1970s-ready and seeking a healthy dose of nostalgia, Hamilton celebrates the 50th anniversary of the world's first digital watch, the Pulsar. And it does it by re-editing this model in a very faithful way. Meet the brand new Hamilton PSR watch…not usual MONOCHROME material, but pretty groovy! The 1960s and 1970s were an era of rapid advancements in technology and the advent of electronics sparked a revolution in watchmaking. The first electric wristwatch was presented in 1957 by Hamilton; the 500 series was available in multiple cases, including the iconic Ventura. Although quartz technology had already been in use for several years for large precision clocks, the real challenge was to miniaturize this technology. In the 1960s, Swiss, American and Japanese watchmakers embarked on a race to develop the first applications o
Hands-On - Oris x Momotaro Jeans Divers Sixty-Five (Specs & Price)
Introduced already five years ago just ahead of Baselworld, the Divers Sixty-Five has quickly become one of the most emblematic watches of Oris, existing in countless permanent, special or limited editions, in multiple materials and in several sizes. Surprisingly, Oris managed to make it consistent and most of the editions proved successful – remember the Bi-Co or the silver dial? The latest in the series is also one of the boldest and most fashion-oriented… Something that could have sounded scary but the result of this collaboration with cult Japanese jean maker, named the Oris x Momotaro Jeans Divers Sixty-Five, was quite cool indeed. And we have it live with us today.Based on the acclaimed ’65The story behind the Divers Sixty-Five is quite interesting. One of the members of the Oris team – a Dutch fellow who’s also a true watch enthusiast – was the owner of a small, quite unknown dive watch from the mid-1960s, a watch with a glossy black domed dia
Chronoswiss Regulator Classic Date (Specs & Price)
It's not easy designing a watch that really differentiates itself from the crowd. Obviously, there's more to a watch than an outward appearance and I'm generalizing, but I've always liked brands that have a distinct style that's easily recognized. You know a Panerai, or Roger Dubuis when you see it, for example. You can also spot a Chronoswiss in the crowd with its knurled case and oversized onion crown, and a style it arguably does best - the regulator. I recently wrote a hands-on article about the Flying Grand Regulator Skeleton Limited Edition, which was an almost futuristic take on the regulator setup. Its Regulator Classic Date is a more subdued and traditional piece, yet maintains the Chronoswiss DNA throughout. Let's take a closer look at the silver edition of a future classic.BACKGROUNDChronoswiss is a surprisingly young watch company and has been on the scene for just 35 years. It produced its first regulator piece in 1987 and is probably best known for this style. The regul
