A Technical Perspective - The Curious Case of Hybrid Watches
Quartz and mechanical watches have learned to co-exist, but the call of nature still produces mixed offspring. If one almost killed the other, mechanical watches rose from the ashes and returned stronger than ever. However, just like the automotive world, things are changing, and the watchmaking industry has seen the arrival of new wrist-worn technologies, inventions which have nothing in common with classic watchmaking – whether we talk quartz or mechanical. Their survival is a matter of evolution, and maybe of merging And here comes the concept of hybrid watchmaking.Defining HybridHybrids entered our world in several areas, generating a fair amount of confusion about the definition. If you are a biologist, a hybrid would mean an offspring of two animals representing different species or varieties. A style combining two elements may be called a hybrid by a musician. In business, a hybrid would be a mix of in-office and remote work so employees have greater work-life balance and

Hands-On - Montblanc 1858 Geosphere WorldTime Watch (SIHH 2018)
It isn’t the first time that Montblanc surprises us with an original (and of course rather accessible) complicated watch. Indeed, we can easily recall the?Orbis Terrarum, which at EUR 5,500 was definitely impressive value for the money (we even compared it to much more expensive pieces here). For 2018, Montblanc does it again, with a new Double-Hemisphere, a sporty version of the WorldTime complication, with the original and vintage-inspired?1858 Geosphere… And we have it live, here on MONOCHROME.The name “Geosphere” might sound familiar to some. Indeed, this is not the first time that Montblanc has created a watch that displays the WorldTime complication with?two turning hemisphere globes. Yet, it was previously seen in the high-end Villeret?Tourbillon Cylindrique Geospheres NightSky… A superb and entirely hand-finished watch, with a price tag of EUR 275,000. Bringing the same concept, of course in a much simpler and rationalized way, is the?Montblanc 185
Rimowa Watch Case - Monochrome Watches
Approximately 99.9% of the articles we publish are stories about watches. That’s what’s MONOCHROME is all about. However, recently I saw a watch box made by Rimowa. You know, that brand that makes beautiful aluminium suitcases and trolleys, dare I say it, iconic aluminium suitcases. The Rimowa watch case looks very Rimowa and is executed in the exact same iconic aluminium looks. We’re all watch enthusiasts (to say the least) and I wanted to have a closer look, so I reached out to the brand and asked for a review model. Would this make the best ‘travel watch case’ on the market??In the MONOCHROME Shop, we also sell watch rolls and watch cases. Since we’re watch collectors ourselves, we always keep an eye on useful (and sometimes more beautiful than useful) watch accessories. Looking at what’s available in terms of watch cases and boxes, there’s quite some variety. From the (often lousy quality) piano lacquered wooden boxes you can find on
