The Collector's Series: Koen's IWC Vintage Ingenieur - Monochrome-Watches
It is with great pleasure we welcome Koen?as a contributor?to the Monochrome-Watches team he is extremely active on the IWC forum and a truly passionate watch geek. When we first sat down on the Collector Series with Koen,?we discussed his stunning Vintage IWC Portofino. On this occasion, in a rather overcast London (no surprise there), his second instalment of the series, we discussed how his passion for IWC lead him to the glorious IWC Vintage Ingenieur.First off let’s take a look back. The first IWC Ingenieur was unveiled in 1955. It was equipped with the first bidirectional automatic movement and developed by the then Technical Director, Albert Pellaton. It wasn’t famous until the early 1970s, when a diver's helmet inspired freelance watch designer Gerald Genta (yes, that’s the same gentleman who designed the AP Royal Oak and Patek’s Nautilus.) His mission was to redesign the Ingenieur. Genta designed the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, which was launched in 1
Omega Speedmaster History Part 1 - the early pre-moons
Fasten your seatbelt and take a ride with us into the past! In this 3-part story, we will try to show you the most important pieces of the huge?Omega Speedmaster?collection. We had the chance to handle the watches from the Omega Museum (that were presented in the Parisian Boutique during a special event), all fully original or even prototypes of one of the most important chronographs ever made. To start the journey, we’re going to cover the 1957-1969 period, also known as the pre-moon times.Historical Background – NASA testingEven if it is now known as the Moonwatch', the Omega Speedmaster wasn't developed with this idea in mind. Back in 1957, it was part of the “Professional” collection, alongside the Seamaster 300 and the Railmaster. The Speedy' was introduced as a racing and sports chronograph, complementing Omega's position as the official timekeeper for the Olympic Games. Such a watch was a useful tool, with its 1/5th of a second chronograph. Keep in mind t
Richemont Announces Strong 2017-2018 Results - Sales and Operating Profit on the Rise - Monochrome Watches
Echoing its rivals in the luxury goods industry – including?LVMH, Kering or Swatch Group – Swiss luxury powerhouse Richemont just announced growth for the year ending 31 March 2018. Sales increased by 3% at actual rates and by 8% at constant rates to EUR 10,979 million. The group reports strong performance in its retail network. Operating profit grew 5% and the proposed dividend will be CHF 1.90 (a 6% increase compared to previous period).Richemont's results confirm the positive trend of the watchmaking and jewellery markets. Swiss watchmakers have seen business improving over the past months after a prolonged downturn (the 2015-2016 crisis had a negative impact on most watchmaking brands). Swatch Group sales increased 5.8% in 2017; LVMH Watches & Jewelry division sales were up 10%. Swiss watch exports increased 2.7% in 2017 and 10.1% over the first quarter of 2018.Concerning the different regions, Asia Pacific (China, Hong Kong, Korea and Macau) has a huge impact on th
