Chopard presents the superbly elegant L.U.C. Strike One - Hands-On
The Chopard L.U.C. saga goes back to 1996 when CEO Karl-Friedrich Scheuffele decided it was time to return to the realms of Haute Horlogerie. Named after the firm's founder, Louis Ulysse Chopard, it was to be the start of a continuous devotion to the finest watchmaking imaginable, marked by the inaugural L.U.C. XPS 1860 in 1997. After a decade of high-end watchmaking, the celebratory L.U.C. Strike One was presented, the brand’s first-ever venture into the world of repeater mechanisms. But there are other pioneers of space whose names are less known and deserve credit for their adventures, like Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. Louis Moinet, the brand whose founder is credited with inventing the chronograph, bring us two watches celebrating two epic exploits in Alexei Leonov’s career: the Louis Moinet SpaceWalker & Skylink. The final frontier, the great unknown, is a recurring theme for Louis Moinet and watches with dials made from meteorite shrapnel, or decorated with planets, artistic nebula and other extra-terrestrial motifs are standard fare at this brand. It is fitting since Louis Moinet, the founder, was a revered astronomer in his own right. Seeking to pay tribute to Alexei Leonov, Louis Moinet has created two very special watches to commemorate two of
Independent Watchmaking - A closer look at Winnerl
Winnerl might be a newcomer but this independent brand bears a historical name, that of a 19th-century Austrian horologist, recently revived by an Austrian watchmaker, Bernhard Zwinz. After having worked for some of the greatest brands and with some of the most respected watchmakers, Zwinz now manufactures watches in his own workshop, inspired by the Winnerl legacy. We had the opportunity to visit him in the Vallee de Joux, to take a closer look at his superbly handcrafted watches.Joseph Thaddeus Winnerl (1799-1886) was an eminent Austrian-born and later Paris-based watchmaker. He is known for his superior chronometers – with a broad array of applications, from the observation of celestial bodies to precise ship's chronometers – and for his work on the creation of different split-second chronograph mechanisms.?
