In-Depth: The History of the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph
Perpetual calendar chronograph watches are remarkable in their ability to measure the fleeting seconds of the present moment and given the right conditions, the passing of days, months, and years far into the future – perhaps even into eternity. Thus, a good title for this review could be From Here to Eternity, the same as James Jones’ 1951 novel, which was later adapted into a 1953 romantic war drama starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Deborah Kerr, and Donna Reed. While the content-wise connection to our topic is nil, the events in the book and the iconic Hollywood film occur in 1941, the same year Patek Philippe introduced its first series-built Perpetual Calendar Chronograph wristwatch, the reference 1518.What made it possible? Why did Patek Philippe decide to create such an extravagant timepiece, not as a custom order but in series, during the height of World War II? Perhaps it was the very troubles of the era that made such bold moves both possib

IWC is celebrating its birthday, and boy does it know how to throw a party! The Schaffhausen-based manufacture is not just releasing one simple anniversary piece for its grand 150th birthday bash, but is launching an array of models from various collections, all sharing one common theme: lacquered dials. It is now time to take a closer look at the IWC Big Pilot's Watch Annual Calendar Edition 150 Years.A pilot’s watch is a utilitarian piece of equipment designed to exalt its primary function of legibility. Introducing Bulgari Octo Finissimo Rose Gold and Brown Dial Collection
We’re right in the middle of what has become an important watch event of the year, a casual, relaxed fair that takes in the capital of watchmaking: Geneva Watch Days. One of the main actors of this show is Bulgari, and among the novelties of the Italian brand in the Finissimo range, there is a rather impressive 8-day Skeleton Octo Finissimo. So here we are with the new rose gold and brown dial editions of the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic and Chronograph GMT. And that also means the discontinuation of one of our favourite early Octo Finissimo models…The new discontinued Octo Finissimo Automatic in sandblasted goldAll new models in the record-breaking Octo Finissimo collection were launched, at first, in sandblasted titanium with a tone-on-tone dial. This discreet, industrial and monochromatic design has become a signature element of the collection, with a matte finishing that makes them unique. Still, more materials and colours have been used over the years, such as stai
Hands-On - The Cartier Pebble Watch Re-Edition (Specs & Price)
Over the years, Cartier's singular perception of elegance and its mastery of shapes have remained the driving force behind the brand's design. The historic Parisian jeweller and watchmaker enjoys an unrivalled legacy in creating fascinating shaped watches. Classic round watches are extremely rare in the brand's collections, and round Cartier watches almost inevitably come with a twist, like the unapologetically elegant Cartier Pebble “Baseball” that has been recreated in a limited edition of 150 pieces to celebrate its 50th anniversary.Vintage Cartier models are all the rage these days. The latest Cartier on everyone's lips is the Pebble – also known as the Baseball. And while everyone now seems to be familiar with the model, it is actually a rare, rather obscure model designed by Cartier London in 1972. Still, the model has been reaching impressive prices at auction. One of the very rare known examples was hammered for CHF 403,000 by Phillips in 2021 in Geneva.?
2021 Longines Legend Diver Gradient Blue or Brown Dial (Price)
The Longines Legend Diver needs little introduction. Indeed, it might well be the most emblematic watch from the winged-hourglass brand's Heritage collection. Based on a historically important “compressor” dive watch from the 1960s, the brand introduced a faithful re-edition back in 2007, and this watch, available in multiple editions, has been around since then. Following the bronze and no-date version recently presented, the brand now introduces colourful editions. Meet the Gradient Blue and Gradient Brown 2021 editions of the Longines Legend Diver (with date…)The LLD is a faithful recreation of a very desirable dive watch created by Longines in 1959, the Ref. 7042. This watch featured an oversized compressor case – with twin crowns and an internal rotating bezel – as well as a highly recognisable, rather elegant black dial with painted, luminous Arabic numerals and elongated minute markers.
