Introducing: Panerai Luminor GMT Power Reserve Ceramica PAM01574

Panerai is the official timekeeper of the Salone del Mobile, the largest and most prestigious annual international design fair held in Milan since 1961. Panerai's involvement with Milan Design Week is celebrated with the release of the new Lumimor GMT Power Reserve Ceramica PAM01574. As a product launched in 1949 that retains many original design traits, the Luminor is rightfully acknowledged as an enduring Italian design icon.Luminescence was Panerai's trump card, and the high-precision instruments the Italian brand supplied to the Royal Italian Navy outshone all others thanks to the application of a radium-based powder patented as Radiomir. In 1949, toxic radium was replaced with tritium (Luminor), and the famous Luminor dive watch materialised with its distinctive crown-protection bridge, now the identity card of the Luminor collection. Its 44mm case is crafted in high-tech black ceramic with contemporary matte sandblasted finishes and polished accents, for example, on the crown. Renowned for its resistance to scratches and lightweight properties, ceramic is no stranger to Panerai and appeared in 2007 on board the Radiomir Black Seal Ceramica PAM00292. The caseback reveals the movement beneath its smoked sapphire crystal, and the 300m water-resistance has been tested to pressures 25% greater than the stipulated 300m.A hallmark of Panerai watches is the sandwich structure of the dial, invented by the brand in the late 1930s. Two discs are stacked on top of one another; the lower disc is covered with a luminous substance, and the top disc has holes cut out for the numerals, allowing the luminescent material to shine through. The blue sunray-brushed dial reveals the lower disc and its Super-LumiNova coating. The white Super-LumiNova X2 with a green emission appears from underneath the indices and is also used on the central hour and minute hands and the running seconds indicator at 9 o'clock. However, the power reserve gauge at 5 o'clock and the arrow-shaped tip of the central 12-hour GMT hand are coated with blue-emission Super-LumiNova. Completing the dial is the bevelled date window at 3 o'clock.Powered by the P.9012 automatic calibre, the GMT or second time zone complication is a perfect tool for global travellers, allowing at-a-glance consultations of home and local time. Two spring barrels store a robust energy supply of three days or 72 hours and are wound by a bidirectional rotor. When the crown is pulled out, the 4Hz balance wheel stops and the small seconds hand resets to zero. This quick time-setting function allows the hour hand and date to be adjusted forward and backward. The new reference PAM01574 is paired with a blue alligator strap, and a second, more casual rubber strap is provided in the package. Thanks to the PAM Click Release System, the strap and buckle can be easily exchanged without tools. The Luminor GMT Power Reserve Ceramica PAM01574 retails for EUR 16,800 / CHF 14,800.
