Interview: Georges Kern on what to expect for the return of Universal Geneve in 2026
About a year ago, Georges Kern, also known as the CEO of Breitling, made a resounding announcement for the watch community; the acquisition of historic brand Universal Geneve and its planned return as a watchmaker in 2026. A brand known for its innovative designs and movements, benefitting from a certain aura in the collecting community, the so-called Couturier de la Montre is set to be back with a collection of high-end watches that “promises to restore the prestige of a hallowed name in the world of luxury timepieces.” This, however, is a well-dressed speech from a press release. However, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Polerouter model, which gave us 3 unique pieces that you can discover here, we decided to take some time to talk to the brand’s CEO, Georges Kern. Why buy Universal? Where does he want to position the brand? What price segment and what overall concept can we expect? We have all the answers.Brice Goulard, MONOCHROME – First, an ea
Petrolhead Corner - The legendary & often overlooked Royal Enfield
We took a look at Harley Davidson's last few traditional Sportsters last year and how remarkably old-school they were. Since 1986, the air-cooled Evo V-twins have barely changed and aren't much different than the Ironhead engines that preceded them (going back to 1957). You'd be hard-pressed to find more traditional motorcycles on showroom floors in 2021. Tragically, the last two Sportster models have been discontinued (as of 2023) in favour of modern, liquid-cooled counterparts, but a brand even more stubborn than Harley is here to fill in the gap. Royal Enfield has been producing motorcycles since 1901, two years before the American brand, and even the newest bikes are throwbacks to the past. It's the epitome of old-school cool!British PioneersRoyal Enfield is an Indian company today but started as a British manufacturer like Triumph, BSA and Norton. Bikes were produced in Redditch, Worcestershire and helped establish the ingredients of a modern motorcycle. The most famous model and
Hands-On: How Good is the new Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT?
Let’s not go into too many details… This watch, the Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT, was one of the most anticipated, most discussed and most appealing watches of the fair. Somehow, in its category of watches made for “normal people” (I’m here excluding highly complex or ultra-luxurious watches that only a few can afford), it stole the show. Why…? First of all, it’s finally here. Many watch enthusiasts have been waiting for a smaller, slimmer GMT watch by Tudor and this Black Bay 58 GMT is the answer to so many requests expressed to Tudor by the community (is it the right answer…? Maybe, but not entirely). Second, because it is once again a highly compelling watch, with a level of equipment and quality that few can rival in this category. How good is it, both technically, visually and on the wrist? Let’s find out.?The Tudor GMT people have been waiting for?Let’s go back in time a bit… The Tudor Black Bay, also known as the corner
Introducing the Panerai Radiomir Platino and Oro Rosso 47mm Special Edition - Monochrome Watches
This year Panerai added two entirely new models to their collection. And by “new” we really mean “new”! After many variations on the familiar Luminor models with the iconic crown protector and the stylish Radiomir cushion-shape case, Panerai is adding more variations to the collection. First there were the Radiomir 1940 models?(will be reviewed here on Monochrome soon!) and now Panerai adds another variation on the Radiomir, again based on a historical model from the 1930’s.?The new models are the Radiomir Platino and Oro Rosso 47mm. Maybe not a distinct name and also the shape does share many similarities with the regular Radiomir cushion-shape, however the two new Special Edition models feature a 12-sided bezel. The two new Special Editions come in red gold (PAM00522) and in?platinum (PAM00521). Ad - Scroll to continue with article
