Introducing The Carillon Tourbillon Biver, The First Watch of JCBiver and His Son
The news broke about a year ago – industry veteran Jean-Claude Biver and his son were about launch their own brand. The idea was to launch a “small family brand, for passionate people, and very exclusive watches“. Off the record, the first watch was to be a carillon minute repeater tourbillon with a micro-rotor presented in spring 2023. The promise has been kept. A few days ago, we joined Jean-Claude Biver and his son Pierre Biver in their new facility in Givrins, a small village between Geneva and Lausanne, to discover the Carillon tourbillon Biver and the father-and-son’s plans for the future. Their first opus combines classic design codes, distinctive character and a high-movement. We also had the opportunity to discuss their future projects and exciting watches are in development: a beautiful three-hander, a jaw-dropping chronograph and even more in the coming years! But this is for later. One of the most prominent figures in the watch
Buying Guide - 5 Perpetual Calendar Watches for February 29th
In less than a week from now, it will be February 29th… Not a big deal, for sure. Unless you’re into watchmaking and want to see something mechanically fascinating. Indeed, watchmakers are sometimes a bit nerdy and imagined a complication that takes into account all the weird things of the Gregorian calendar. This means months with 30 or 31 days or even a month with 28 days. And, even rarer, once every 4 years, a longer version of February with 29 days. And as this specificity of our calendar will happen in a few days from now, we’ve listed 5 perpetual calendar watches for most tastes, from rather accessible to elegant, sporty or mechanically impressive. The Accessible – Frederique Constant Slimline Perpetual CalendarBeing the most complex version of the calendar complication found in a mechanical watch, you would obviously expect a perpetual calendar to be expensive. Certainly, most of the QPs will require a nice 5-digit bank cheque – without any additiona
Ferdinand Berthoud, Chronometry and the FB1-R Regulator
Resurrecting the Ferdinand Berthoud name, an eminent 18th-century horologist, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele (co-president of Chopard) and his team have shown quite a talent to surprise and amaze us. The niche, high-end brand has presented several creations that are not just nostalgic products but modern wristwatches. These are nonetheless loyal to the legacy of the name Berthoud. In particular, the brand's first modern opus, the Chronometre FB1 was awarded the Aiguille d'Or at the GPHG 2016, the Oscars of watchmaking.? Ferdinand Berthoud was born in 1727 near Neuchatel, Switzerland but moved to Paris to practise his trade. He left behind an exceptional legacy and a broad body of work, in particular in the field of marine chronometers as watchmaker-mechanic to the French King and the Navy (Horloger Mecanicien du Roi et de la Marine).Reviving his name, chronometry has come to occupy a very special place. Based on the same calibre architecture, all modern Ferdinan
Introducing: The Most Complicated Watch Ever, the Vacheron Constantin Berkley Grand Complication
Back in 2015, on the occasion of the brand's 260th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin unveiled the Reference 57260, a pocket watch made-to-order for a collector considered the most complicated in the world – with no fewer than 57 complications, including Gregorian, Judaic, and lunar calendars. On the occasion of Watches & Wonders 2024, the Geneva-based manufacture goes even further with another commissioned piece (by the same collector), the Vacheron Constantin Berkley Grand Complication. Uniting no fewer than 63 complications, including the first Chinese Perpetual Calendar, it becomes the most complicated watch ever created. Again! Before delving into the details and intricacies of this utterly complex creation, a few words about its story. It took a dedicated team of three watchmakers an impressive 11 years to craft this exclusive bespoke timepiece, with one entire year devoted solely to the assembly process! Such a journey exemplifies a remarkable human endeavour and adventur
