Hands-On - A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Titanium Limited Edition
The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus is a surprising watch on many levels. Dubbed the ALS you can wear on a daily basis, it’s a rather Germanic take on the luxury sports watch, with a different approach to the concept than, for instance, the Royal Oak, Nautilus or Overseas. More complex, less integrated, not that thin… far less Genta-esque, in fact. It truly has its own personality and, even though it came as a surprise in 2019, it has become a success for the brand. Building on its popularity, the Saxon brand decided to release its first limited edition (as if the regular steel version was easy to get!), the Odysseus Titanium. And yes, it is a stunning watch on many levels. Probably the best of the collection so far. But it’s also a watch that has provoked comments. The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus, as presented in 2019It might sound a bit cliche to start this article by already saying that the A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Titanium is a stunning watch. Truth is, this w
Omega Constellation Co-Axial Master Chronometer 41mm
Although it doesn’t have the cachet of a Speedmaster with its legendary Moon landing or a Seamaster worn in an action-packed James Bond episode, the Omega Constellation is one of the brand’s oldest and most enduring collections that started life in 1952 as a precision chronometer wristwatch. Revisited over the years, the transformation that most influenced the contemporary look of the Constellation took place in 1982, the year the watch got its claws. Following the update to the 29mm Constellation Manhattan ladies’ model?in 2019, the gent’s 39mm and 41mm were also upgraded in 2020 and equipped with Master Chronometer calibre 8800. The time-and-date watch we are looking at today is the handsome 41mm steel version with a black dial and integrated strap. Although we have often referred to it as a luxury sports watch – given its shaped case, raised bezel and integrated bracelet – having handled the sleek black dial and bezel version, I am tempted to rela
In-Depth - Commemorating 40 Years of Watchmaking by Svend Andersen
Svend Andersen needs no introduction to many enthusiasts and collectors. He's the man that is responsible for (now over) forty years of highly creative watchmaking stemming from Geneva. What Svend Andersen does is a unique and eclectic mix of original and inventive watchmaking, often mixed with playful themes and unconventional designs, all made to order for clients. Celebrating his 40th-anniversary last year, we take a closer look at the Jumping Hour watch, his latest creation and one that almost took home top honours in the Artistic Crafts category at last year's Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve.Svend Andersen at work – photo by watchesbysjx.comSvend Andersen operates under the name Andersen Geneve, but considering the man is basically the brand, we stick to referring to Svend Andersen. In all his watchmaking career, Svend has amassed quite the set of skills, from early on already. The early days; from Denmark to SwitzerlandFresh out of school, with a watchmaking degree under h
SIHH 2019 - Montblanc Heritage Manufacture Perpetual Calendar LE100 (Specs & Price)
For the SIHH 2019, Montblanc introduces a completely revamped “Heritage” collection. Hardly a newcomer, the Heritage collection already houses models such as the Heritage Spirit Pulsograph?or the?Heritage Perpetual Calendar. The latter became the talking piece at the SIHH 2014, positioning itself at that time as the most affordable QP on the market. Having a redesigned collection is one thing, but Montblanc has decided to give this watch something extra: the brand’s first manufacture perpetual calendar movement. Meet the new?Montblanc Heritage Manufacture Perpetual Calendar LE100.Inspired by vintage Minerva watchesNo debate… the design of the new?Montblanc Heritage is vintage to the core. By looking at the rich Minerva archives (Minerva is now owned by MB), the brand resurrects some of the glorious design elements found on these watches. Restrained proportions, elegant shapes, domed dials, two-tone colour schemes, applied dots and numerals, retro-styled hands
Introducing: Vacheron Constantin Tribute To Traditional Symbols
Vacheron Constantin taps into a more creative vein with the latest quartet of watches celebrating ancient Chinese culture. Emerging from Vacheron's Metiers d'Art atelier, the four models offer two different interpretations of the legendary Chinese motif known as the Seawater Cliff. The motif, which appeared in the 14th century, represents the sea crashing against steep cliffs. Presented in 38mm gold cases with richly decorated dials using different enamelling techniques, the two Eternal Flow models feature vivid technicolour dials, while the Moonlight Slivers interpret the theme in a more restrained palette. For the latest Metier's d'Art Series, Vacheron's design department was drawn to the Seawater Cliff, an omnipresent symbol of imperial China reproduced in architecture, furniture, porcelain and silk ceremonial dragon robes. This motif, which emerged during the Ming (1368-1644) and was perpetuated during the Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, depicts cliffs being pounded by the sea and repre
