Swatch Group (meaning 18 brands) To Leave Baselworld in 2019 - Monochrome Watches
For once, we’re not going to use the “breaking news” title for nothing. What came in this morning is important news, no debate. As reported?by Swiss newspapers NZZ am Sonntag and Le Temps, Swatch Group, the world’s largest watchmaking group, will be leaving Baselworld – Switzerland’s largest watch and jewellery fair – as of next year. After already several departures and complaints, this is another hard blow for the highly?decried show.?In an interview with the Swiss newspaper?NZZ am Sonntag?that was published this morning, Nick Hayek, CEO of the Swatch Group, explains that it is no longer relevant or useful for the group to exhibit at Baselworld – even though the Swatch Group’s brand portfolio was one of the major, if the not the main, exhibiting groups of the show. Business - Analysis of the Swiss watchmaking industry in 2014 - Monochrome-Watches
The?Swiss watchmaking industry is known to be a dream factory. If you’re a collector and a frequent reader of Monochrome-Watches, you certainly know what we mean by that. However, Swiss manufactures are also (actually mainly) businesses, with a unique goal: selling watches, achieving a worldwide recognition and creating value. In order to understand a bit more about this industry that we too often view only from the product side, here are some interesting figures about the year 2014.Let’s start immediately with the impressive numbers. Embracing Death with the Chopard L.U.C Full Strike 'D¨ªa de los Muertos'
The D¨ªa de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a day of celebrating the lives of our deceased loved ones, instead of mourning over their passing. It is a day of remembering the good times and cherishing valuable memories. While primarily celebrated in Latin American cultures, it is embraced by an increasing number of people outside of that. Dedicated to this rather special day, Chopard has created a one of a kind Haute Horlogerie piece. This is the Chopard L.U.C Full Strike D¨ªa de los Muertos. The D¨ªa de Los Muertos is a rather joyous occasion, dedicated to life instead of death in contrast to what the name might imply. Celebrations often include the use of bright coloured depictions of skulls, called Calaveras, and lots of music. In that sense, creating a minute repeater in honour of this day seems like a logical choice, even if it is a one-off only. It’s also not the first time Chopard has embraced the Day of the Dead as inspiration for a unique piece. Ad - Scroll to

German brand MeisterSinger has carved a niche in the market with its single-handed watches. The Perigraph, MeisterSinger's automatic watch with an open date ring is revisited in this handsome, 43mm bronze case. A winning combination of industrial German design with the warm vintage appeal of bronze, this new take on the Perigraph is a limited edition of just 100 pieces and is available at retailers now. And here are our thoughts about it.Going for the BronzeAs you know, bronze cases have made a strong comeback on the watch scene. Thanks to its resistance to corrosion, bronze has been used widely in the production of nautical and scientific instruments. The patina that develops over time gives watches a distinctive antique feel we associate with early marine chronometers and other seafaring equipment. And don't be fooled into thinking that only chunky dive watches (this or that) are suitable vessels for the heavy metal, bronze has transitioned across the board as a case material for pil
