In-Depth: The History of the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph
Perpetual calendar chronograph watches are remarkable in their ability to measure the fleeting seconds of the present moment and given the right conditions, the passing of days, months, and years far into the future – perhaps even into eternity. Thus, a good title for this review could be From Here to Eternity, the same as James Jones’ 1951 novel, which was later adapted into a 1953 romantic war drama starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Deborah Kerr, and Donna Reed. While the content-wise connection to our topic is nil, the events in the book and the iconic Hollywood film occur in 1941, the same year Patek Philippe introduced its first series-built Perpetual Calendar Chronograph wristwatch, the reference 1518.What made it possible? Why did Patek Philippe decide to create such an extravagant timepiece, not as a custom order but in series, during the height of World War II? Perhaps it was the very troubles of the era that made such bold moves both possib
IWC Ingenieur Automatic ref.3239 Reviewed - Monochrome Watches
In January of this year, IWC introduced an entire new Ingenieur collection. Not just one or two new models; the entire collection was ‘reinvented’. While many of the new Ingenieur models feature all kind of technical innovations, the ref. 3239 Ingenieur Automatic, goes back to its roots. Back to the classic Ingenieur SL ref. 1832 that was designed by Gerald Genta. Will this also become such a classic? It is of course impossible to answer that question, however Monochrome did take a closer look at the Ingenieur Automatic ref. 3239-04 and gave it some serious wrist-time. We cannot predict if it will ever become a classic like its ancestor from the 1970’s, but we can check if all ingredients are present. The new Ingenieur Automatic is? smaller and thinner than any other Ingenieur, well, smaller and thinner than any Ingenieur since the classic SL ref. 1832 designed by Genta. And it wears accordingly, super comfortable. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
Farer Stanhope - A Classic Design and a Fun, Sophisticated Dial Give Farers 37mm Hand-Wound a Ton of Character - Monochrome Watches
The United Kingdom seems to be a hotbed for independent watch brands these days with names like Vertex, Garrick, Bremont?and Pinion, among many others. Farer Universal is a relative newcomer and takes inspiration from 1960s and 1970s watchmaking, adding colourful and sophisticated dials to a variety of styles. We reviewed its Aqua Compressor Endeavour last year and walked away impressed, and its most recent chronographs are right up there with established brands like Hamilton and Tissot (see our editorial on Microbrands vs. Accessible Established Brands). The Stanhope was introduced in 2018 with the brand's smallest case to date and a hand-wound ETA movement, joining two others in the collection, the Lansdell and Hudson. Most of Farer's portfolio contains automatic watches with a couple of quartz options, so the 37mm hand-wound collection stands out in both size and movement. The Stanhope proved to be the most popular of the trio with the first batch selling out quickly. Let's take a c
Hands-on with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 Boutique Edition (live photos, specs & price) - Monochrome-Watches
How would you define a classical, dress watch? Sit down for a minute and ask the question to yourself and to people next to you… The definition will certainly evolve?around a rather small, elegantly shaped, most probably slim and in gold watch. Then, what complication do you want to see on the dial? A chronograph or a rotating bezel? Certainly not. What about a moon-phases indication? And what about a date? That could be quite nice, don’t you think. Well, if that’s what you’re looking for, we might have a solution for you. Here is the?Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 Boutique Edition. This watch is nothing about a proper novelty. It’s even a watch that we reviewed recently (short after SIHH 2015) in a stainless steel / black dial combination. What we said about this watch was simple: “This watch is neither a?tourbillon, nor a?minute repeater?or a?skeleton chronograph. Instead, it shows what Jaeger-LeCoultre does on a daily basis, the watches
The AGTZ Twin Tail is Zagatos Tribute To The Legendary Alpine A220 Racing Car
The first test flight of the Concorde, the moon landing, the Woodstock festival, and Monty Python’s Flying Circus first aired on BBC One… just a few of the major historic events that happened in the year 1969. In motorsports, a lot happened too, as Sir Jackie Stewart won his first of three Formula 1 World Driver Championships, Bruce McLaren dominated the Can-Am series in a car built by his own team, and Ford won Le Mans for a fourth consecutive year. But that same year, the French team of Alpine entered the A220, a racing car that might not have won Le Mans that year but has become sort of a cult hero. Most notably for its short-to-longtail conversion from 1968 to 1969, which is now paid tribute to by none other than Zagato.?The famous Italian design studio and coachbuilding company Zagato has been around for more than 100 years and is known for its unique styling. Founded by Ugo Zagato in 1919, the company quickly garnered fame by making lightweight bodies for Alfa Romeo
