Opinion - Why the Captain Willard SPB153 is The Coolest Seiko of 2020?
Earlier this year, Seiko brought back one of its legendary designs, a watch that not only marked the brand’s history and became an incredible commercial success in the 1970s, but a watch that gained fame after being worn on Captain Willard's (Martin Sheen) wrist in Apocalypse Now. Available in black and in green, and despite the fact that the green version is not historically relevant, I immediately fell in love with this olive-coloured, military-inspired edition… and I bought it. So, let’s make it clear, this article is not going to be objective. It’s not going to be factual. But it will simply reflect why I think (why I’m sure, actually) the Captain Willard SPB153 is the coolest Seiko of 2020.BackgroundBefore we move on with this article, it’s important to remember where the Seiko ‘Captain Willard’ Reissue comes from. This isn’t the first time that Seiko brings back a reissue of the so-called Turtle watch. There’s already a
Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Self-Winding 36mm white gold Unisex Watch (Specs & Price)
Vacheron Constantin introduces its third iteration of the Patrimony Self-Winding 36mm, this time in white gold with an automatic movement. Designed to swing it both ways, the new model will certainly be well received by women who appreciate a mechanical movement and who prefer the timeless elegance of a classic, round case, and a simple, refined dial. Unlike so many women's watches that lure us with their sparkling gem-set surfaces and sugary motifs, Vacheron's Patrimony 36mm proposes a timepiece that might seem Calvinist in appearance, but which is full of appealing details that will win converts from all denominations. But first a quick word on unisex watches. The steady rise of unisex watchesTrends in the mechanical watch world tend to move at a rather more sedate pace than hi-tech products, but for horological trend spotters, there is no denying that, of late, there has been a noticeable reduction in case diameters. Not earth-shattering news for most mortals, but for watch aficionad
Jaquet Droz Makes Three Watches Fit for a King - Monochrome Watches
It is good to be the king. In the absence of lineage and title, it is equally satisfying to have the watchmaker of kings cater to one's aspiration. In 1758, watchmaker Jaquet Droz, in a profitable journey to the Spanish court, laded a carriage with six clocks. This inaugural trip paved the way for his automatons, clocks and watches to find their way into the courts of Europe and Asia's kings and emperors - especially China's. Last year's Bird Repeater captured the automaton flair that entertained the nobility. Now the Jaquet Droz company introduces three limited edition models with dials made by paillonne enameling, a specialty of the company since those itinerate days of the 18th Century. The paillonne dial makes a limited debut of 8 pieces each: in the 39 mm Petite Heure Minute, 43 mm Grande Seconde, and 50 mm pocket watch. For the confident man desirous of a commanding dress (or pocket) watch which evokes a stylistic superiority, Jaquet Droz provides a rarity equal to its fabled pat
