Best Of 2019 - Our Top 5 High-End Complicated Watches / Buying Guide
As 2019 is coming to an end, we've gathered the MONOCHROME redaction team and started to think about the watches that most impressed us this year. After a look at the best chronographs, the best dive watches,?the best traveller's watches?and our favourite accessible watches, it is time to look at the stuff dreams are made of… The inaccessible, the exceptional, the watches without compromise – but not those that are unattainable just to show off, but because what’s inside is pure high-horology. So here are the 5 high-end and complicated watches that we consider our Best of 2019.?Armin Strom Minute Repeater ResonanceThe past couple of years, Armin Strom has been demonstrating impressive innovation spirit and cutting-edge technology, first and foremost with its one-of-a-kind Resonance concept – one of the few that truly works. After several watches with this technology only, the brand has decided this year to combine it with one of the most complex of functions, th
Introducing the Panerai Radiomir 1940 3-Days Automatic with Panerai's First Micro-Rotor Movement - Monochrome-Watches
Off all things we could expect, this was certainly not on our short list. Panerai just introduced their first in-house movement with a micro-rotor. The new P.4000 movement will be officially launched at the Watches & Wonders fair (yes, it’s that season again) in the 45mm large Panerai Radiomir 1940 3-Days Automatic that will be available in stainless steel (Accacio) or rose gold (Oro Rosso.) Let’s have a closer look at this ‘elegant‘ new movement from the brand that is (or was?) inseparable from its military heritage. Every mechanical movement powered by a micro-rotor is simply a bit different from any mechanical movement with a full rotor. Of course, the differences are obvious, but for collectors the micro-rotor powered movements are always a bit more special. Micro-rotor movements have the imago of being a touch more refined, they are loved for not obscuring the beauty of a movement (a full rotor does exactly that) and being more part of the entire design
IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Racer - Monochrome Watches
Like I already announced last Saturday, when I wrote about the new Ingenieur Automatic, IWC is seriously redesigning their Ingenieur Collection. Today we can show you the Ingenieur Chronograph Racer, that, like the Ingenieur AMG Black Series, results from the cooperation with Mercedes AMG Petronas. The?Ingenieur Chronograph Racer ?is powered by the IWC in-house automatic flyback chronograph calibre 89361, that we already know from the Portuguese Yacht Club. The totalizers of this movement’s chronograph are placed in one subdial at the 12 o’clock position and the central seconds hand sweeps along the bezel with an engraved tachymeter scale, true to its name ‘Racer’. Ad - Scroll to continue with article The movement used features a flyback function for instant stop, reset and start measuring time again. It beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph,
Kelvin Sa and his De Bethune DBS - Monochrome Watches
In this week’s installment of The Collector’s Series, we’re talking with Kelvin Sa about his amazing De Bethune DBS. Kelvin, one of the founding members of the Shanghai Watch Gang (@shanghaiwatchgang), knows a lot about the watch that we discuss today and meeting fellow watch enthusiasts certainly contributes to this. Kelvin Sa, or Mr_Kelvinator on Instagram, is a watch collector from Shanghai, China, who is self-employed in Tech & Finance, and he tells us everything about his stunning De Bethune DBS!?On a side note, clubs for watch collectors, like the Shanghai Watch Gang, are instrumental in learning about watches, brands, history, technology and of course for sharing the passion! Until?a decade or two ago, all information about watches came to us though print magazines. Slowly the digital age commenced… Some two decades ago, forums were founded and blogs started. This offered new opportunities! Because like-minded watch enthusiasts met one another digital
Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph 180th Anniversary REVIEWED - Monochrome Watches
Over the past years Longines has released quite a few historically inspired timepieces like the Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch and the Weems Second-Setting Watch, which both featured in our History of the Pilot’s Watch part IV. But Longines didn’t stop there. They do have a very rich and long history, meaning many important timepieces from the past that easily qualify for a re-issue. Today we’re gonna have a look at the Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph that was released in celebration of the 180th anniversary of the brand.Today Longines is not only known for their rich history, but also for the ‘affordable luxury’ they create. I cannot think of another brand that has so much, including in-house movements, and prices them in the range from roughly € 1.000 Euro to 6 or 7k Euro for a full gold timepiece with an in-house column wheel chronograph. If that isn’t impressive! For this review Longines lend us a very special piece that was intro
