A model of brutalist inspiration, the reference 5159BA stands out with its yellow gold asymmetrical case and eccentric shape. Zenith El-Primero Pilot/Diver 3019PHC - Monochrome Watches
The watch we will show you today launches a new section here at Monochrome. A section exclusively focused on vintage watches. Why exclusively, and why vintage, you might wonder? Vintage watches are the watches of days gone by since they were manufactured in an era when mechanical was the only way to go. These timepieces were designed and manufactured mainly to fulfill their specific functions. They were luxury items; they were symbols of status; but mainly and most importantly the vast majority of them were created to serve a certain purpose, in a world in need of accurate time-keeping instruments. The submariner was actually used by divers, recreational and professional alike. The Omega Speedmaster helped the astronauts of Apollo XIII to return back home. The IWC Mk XI was used by the British and Commonwealth Navigators to find their way through dead reckoning navigation. The Breitling Navitimer was actually employed by civilian pilots to calculate basic parameters of their flight,
A One-on-one Interview with an American Hero: Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger - Monochrome Watches
Heroes are giants – gods among us mere mortals. Heroes are larger-than-life figures who occupy the stratosphere, enjoying the view from mount Olympus as the twenty-four hour news channels immortalize them. In making their feats appear effortless, they gain our admiration, nay our devotion, and sometimes in feats of mythic proportion, our worship. Aviators have ascended this pedestal, and to the annals, which include such names as Charles Lindbergh (see here), we can add Captain Sully and include him in the pantheon of heroes. JEANRICHARD, however, would correct our hero misconceptions with their interpretation of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In this regard, Captain Sully is a perfect match for the brand. If the name Sully doesn’t immediately jog your memory, let me share the mental image of an airplane floating in the Hudson river with the aircraft intact and no casualties. From those images, the world learned that Captain Sullenberger piloted his disabled cra
Hands-On - The Surprisingly Affordable Longines Master Collection Annual Calendar (Specs & Price)
If you want to dip your toe into the world of sophisticated complications, it usually comes at a price. A tourbillon, for example, can easily add CHF 20,000 or more to the price of a watch. The Longines Master Collection has been around since 2005 and serves as a contemporary alternative to its revered Heritage Collection (with more traditional designs). The Master Collection has a wide variety of complications, from power reserve displays to calendar chronographs with moon phase and more, but these new models are the first for Longines to have an annual calendar. The Longines Master Collection Annual Calendar not only offers a more sophisticated calendar complication than the norm but does so at an impressively affordable price. What exactly is an annual calendar? Well, there are several ways for a mechanical watch to display calendar information. First is a date complication, or a simple numerical day of the month. Then there's a day-date complication that displays both days of the we
Weekly Watch Photo - vintage LIP Venus Chronograph - Monochrome Watches
With our Weekly Watch Photo of this week we go back to our roots. Showing photos that made an impact on us and we’re not going to write an extensive story about it. Why, you might wonder? Because there simply isn’t much information to be found about the LIP watch in question. The photographer is Frenchmen Etienne Malec, who’s photos can be admired here at his website. This first photo caught my attention. Not because this particular watch brand has a huge legacy in watchmaking. It was simply because of the aesthetics of a typical 1960’s chronograph with a manually wound Venus movement and a “panda dial”. That dial what I also like so much about vintage Heuer Carrera watches, coming from that same era.
