IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph US Navy Squadrons Editions Hands-On
For over 85 years, with the introduction of its first aviation timepiece in 1936, IWC Schaffhausen has been flying high with its pilot's watches. Since then, IWC has been perfecting the functional requirements of the Flieger watch with first-hand feedback from pilots, a crucial factor in developing mil-spec service watches. Today, the Schaffhausen-based brand releases three new ceramic chronographs directly inspired by the brand's collaborations with U.S. Navy squadrons. Marking the first time these squadron watches are available for civilian wrists, the chronographs fly the colours and squadron patch of three U.S. Navy and Marine corps aviation units: “Royal Maces”, “Tophatters” and “Blue Angels”. Rugged 44.5mm ceramic cases and sealed titanium casebacks engraved with the squadron's patch protect the brand's latest column-wheel chronograph movement.Legitimate aviation watchesContrary to many watch brands that produce aviation-inspired watches withou
Hands-On: The Appealing Raymond Weil Millesime Small Seconds Sector Dial
When you look at this watch, you might think that someone opened a wooden drawer in the attic of a venerable manufacture, found a dusty box and opened it to reveal a well-preserved late-1930s watch. A representative of the brand’s heritage, which would become the base for a re-edition. Except that here, we’re talking about Raymond Weil, a brand founded in 1976, which has 1) never produced such watches and 2) never been truly considered by watch enthusiasts. But this new Millesime Small Seconds, which took the industry by surprise when it won the 2023 Challenge Watch Prize at the GPHG, is on a mission to change the brand’s perception.?Despite a difficult conjuncture in the middle of a watch industry crisis, Raymond Weil (1926-2014) decided to found his own watch company in 1976. He would later be joined by his son-in-law Olivier Bernheim in 1982 to create what remains to this day a family-owned business under the direction of Elie Bernheim, the third generation leading
Value Proposition Marloe Haskell Hand-Wound ETA (Specs & Price)
Marloe Watch Company is a brand of only a few years, but already has a nice portfolio of affordable, mechanical watches. It has chosen to use hand-wound movements in all four of its lines and I'm a big fan of this decision. I like the daily interaction that comes with winding a watch and the view from an exhibition caseback is more detailed without the interference of a rotor. Most of its watches use either Seagull or Miyota movements, but its flagship Haskell now has a Swiss ETA beating inside. I hesitate to claim that an ETA movement is superior to a comparable Miyota - is a Ferrari superior to an Acura NSX or Lexus LFA? - but the perception surrounding Swiss movements is real and I applaud Marloe for a well-executed piece with Swiss technology. Let's take a closer look at the Marloe Haskell.BACKGROUNDMarloe Watch Company is based in Oxfordshire, England and was founded in 2015 by two watch enthusiasts and friends, Oliver and Gordon. They have a shared passion for hand-wound watches
Ulysse Nardin Stranger - a Music Box on the Wrist - Monochrome Watches
?Ulysse Nardin presents a world first: a wrist watch with a music box, called Stranger. Why this name you might wonder? That’s because it plays the?melody Strangers in the Night. This brilliant masterpiece was created by?Dieter Meier, the Godfather of Techno-Music who scored hits under the name Yello, and?Dr. Ludwig Oechslin. Ludwig Oechslin is of course no ‘stranger’ (pun intended) for Monochrome readers, as we know him from the MIH Watch and Ochs und Junior (check here and here and here). But Oechslin has a long relationship with Ulysse Nardin, which grabs back to him developing the legendary Freak, the?Trilogy of Time collection – comprising the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei, Planetarium Copernicus and Tellurium Johannes Kepler - and the?GMT Perpetuel, boasting an unusual perpetual calendar with a second time zone that can be adjusted forward or backward. We could go on about Oechslin’s genius, however a recommended read is?his biography, as published on
Vintage beauty - Vacheron Constantin American 1921 - Monochrome Watches
When Vacheron Constantin launched the Historique American 1921, information about it’s ancestor was made available as well. With all the information to be found, the original watches are rare, very, very rare! So imagine how surprised I was to get an email from an owner who’s inherited a vintage American 1921 and is looking to sell it. This specific ‘American 1921’ was the first Vacheron to bear this name and was limited to 10 pieces. It was also the first with it’s crown at the 2 o’clock position, or as collectors call it a ‘crown right’ model. The last one of these ‘right crown’ models sold for 61,000 CHF at the Antiquorum ‘Quarter Millenium of Vacheron Constantin‘ auction in 2005.
