Spotted - The Watches of Dutch King Willem-Alexander on Koningsdag
April 27th in the Netherlands is Koningsdag or King’s Day. It is a national holiday and celebrates the birth of King Willem-Alexander who was born on 27 April 1967 to Princess Beatrix and diplomat Claus van Amsberg. He became Prince of Orange when his mother became Queen of the Netherlands on 30 April 1980. Willem-Alexander became King in 2013 after Queen Beatrix abdicated. The King is married to M¨¢xima Zorreguieta Cerruti, who is now Queen consort and they have three daughters. And because MONOCHROME has Dutch roots (doesn’t it, Frank Geelen?), we thought it would be a good time to look at the wristwatches of the King, as he owns a few interesting pieces. The first watch spotted on King Willem-Alexander’s wrist is a stainless-steel Datejust on a jubilee bracelet, with a blue dial. A classic timepiece that works well with formal and casual attire. Willem-Alexander wore this watch when he got married in February 2002.? Ad - Scroll to continue with article
New Longines Elegant Collection 39mm for 2022 - Hands-On, Price
While Longines has recently invested a lot of effort in its retro-styled pilot’s collection, the Spirit and all variants – which you can explore here – as well as its Heritage models, the brand also has a pretty consistent portfolio of elegant dress watches that often fly under the radar. Surely, we have a thing for these inspired and cool collections, but not everyone is looking for such models. A relatively significant fraction of future owners is simply looking for an elegant, restrained watch that can easily be worn at the office. And in this field, the Winged Hourglass has something new with some arguments under the hood; the new Longines Elegant Collection 39mm models. The new models in the Longines Elegant Collection are all about visual discretion and refinement at a fair price, yet with modern, daily-compliant mechanics under the sapphire caseback. It’s not just simple watches to display the time. Longines has made sure that the new 39mm members of the?E
2022 Patek Philippe 5271P With Sapphires & Rubies
If there’s one watch that perfectly defines Patek Philippe, it has to be the chronograph perpetual calendar – a combination that was first introduced by the brand with the reference 1518 and which is now represented by the 5270. This watch debuted in rather neutral, slightly conservative editions but has been updated recently with far bolder styles, such as the green lacquered edition of 2022. In addition, Patek also proposes a gem-set version in platinum, known as the 5271P. Previously available with diamonds and a black dial, this ultra-luxury reference makes a remarkable comeback this year with two new coloured editions, the new Patek Philippe Chronograph Perpetual Calendar 5271P with rubies or blue sapphires, and matching lacquered dials.Regarding the proportions and movement, there’s not much news. The 5271P is nothing more than a stone-packed version of the already desirable and high-end 5270. Yet, there are a few things to be said about these new versions of th
Introducing 2021 Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Collection (Live Pics, Price)
Celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, Ulysse Nardin enlarges and enhances its Marine Torpilleur collection with the introduction of complications and enamel dials. As the youngest member of the distinguished Marine Collection inspired by Ulysse Nardin's historic marine chronometers, the Marine Torpilleur picks up on vintage design cues but comes in a lighter, younger and more versatile package like the fast, manoeuvrable torpedo boats that inspired its name. A demonstration of Ulysse Nardin's impressive savoir-faire accumulated since 1846 and its revolutionary Silicium technology, the new Marine Torpilleurs introduce variety into the collection. The seven new Marine Torpilleurs are limited editions and will be unveiled during the 2021 edition of Geneva Watch Days. Background Marine TorpilleurAlthough Switzerland is landlocked, Ulysse Nardin has always felt the call of the sea. Founded in 1846 in Le Locle by Ulysse Nardin, the young clockmaker consolidated his reputation with prec
Introducing Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygen LE290
Montblanc has eyes set on Mount Everest with its latest 1858 Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygen LE290. The case is literally void of oxygen to prevent fogging and oxidation in sub-zero temperatures and extreme altitudes. The brand isn't just claiming this but enlisting mountaineer Nimsdai Purja to wear this new chronograph version of the Geosphere watch to the peak of Everest in May 2022. Recommended by legendary alpinist Reinhold Messner, Nimsdai will make the ascent for Montblanc without supplemental oxygen, and he'll depend on the new chronograph to perform without issue.?Nimsdai was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the United Kingdom for outstanding achievement in extreme high-altitude mountaineering. He also has an elite military background, so he's certainly up for the task. The chronograph should be equally capable with a sizeable titanium case at 44mm in diameter and 17.1mm in height. Although large, the brushed/polished titanium build will keep it lig
