Frederique Constant Highlife Collection (Specs & Price)
Frederique Constant is, without doubt, one of the most impressive entrepreneurial success stories in the recent history of the watch industry. Created in the late 1980s, the Geneva-based brand gained international recognition by manufacturing elegant, classic watches at reasonable prices, even demonstrating a certain mechanical savoir-faire with in-house movements and complications – such as a flyback chronograph, a perpetual calendar and a tourbillon. Frederique Constant now enters one of the most dynamic markets of the industry, that of the luxury sports watch with integrated bracelet. Meet the Frederique Constant Highlife collection.?In 1972, Gerald Genta’s Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet defined a genre that has never seemed more relevant. The archetype is straightforward: match a sporty but sophisticated steel watch with an integrated bracelet and an automatic movement. Robustness and refinement combined. Although most high-end manufacturers have entered this market R
Technical Perspective: A Comprehensive History of the Automatic Watch
Eliminating the need for regular hand-winding, the automatic watch harnesses the energy from the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist to wind the mainspring that powers the watch. In general, it contains a rotor, a semi-circular piece of heavy metal that rotates with the motion of the wrist. As the rotor spins, it winds the mainspring. Automatic watches are appreciated for their practicality and functionality. Today, most mechanical watches are equipped with a self-winding mechanism. Over the years, these have become more and more elaborate. Like many breakthroughs that are taken for granted in watchmaking tradition, the automatic watch results from a long and complex history, which is not always clearly documented, and dozens of incremental steps that have made the self-winding mechanism what it is today. Here are some of the milestones in its development with our latest instalment of A Technical Perspective.?Late 18th century – The fathers of the first automatic watchesIt
Piaget Polo S Black ADLC / Rubber SIHH 2017 (Specs & Price)
Launched with great fanfare in the middle of last year – see our introducing article – the Piaget Polo S was both a breath of fresh air for Piaget and, at the same time (and unfortunately) the most controversial watch of the year 2016. This is the sad part of the story. This watch is great… alone. But it lives in a market full of competitors. It seems that Piaget heard the complaints and for the SIHH 2017, some new limited editions have been showed, the?Piaget Polo S Black ADLC / Rubber 3-hand and chronograph – a world of difference… And?that’s were the deal becomes pretty interesting.BackgroundThe 2016 inaugural collection of the Piaget Polo S Ad - Scroll to continue with article When launched in July 2016, the Piaget Polo S has received a huge coverage from the dedicated press, including us here, at Monochrome-Watches. Event Recap: Sharing the Passion for Fine Watchmaking with Montblanc - Monochrome Watches
Last week we organized a very special evening, together with our friends of Montblanc. The evening was dedicated to ‘Sharing the passion for Fine Watchmaking’ and took place in the Montblanc boutique in Amsterdam. The main stars that evening were five of the magnificent creations from the Montblanc manufacture in Villeret.Montblanc’s manufacture in Villeret is to experts and knowledgeable collectors also known as the former Minerva manufacture. That means magnificently hand-finished bridges, levers, cams and plates, that are characteristic for the iconic chronograph movements and other calibres. The stunning creations from the Villeret manufacture are rare, maybe not as rare as the Heuer Autavia with prototype orange dial that we showed you yesterday, but rare enough to clear your schedule for an evening and visit the Montblanc boutique. Some of the timepieces from Montblanc’s Collection Villeret 1858And that is exactly what many of Monochrome’s readers did
First Look: The Surprisingly Good Circula Facet
Circula might be a relatively new brand to some, as it was only revived in 2018. However, it was originally founded in 1955 by Heinz Huber, but what makes this different from most reboots is Cornelius Huber, the grandson of Heinz, who's behind the brand today. So, Circula is truly a family business and already has an extensive portfolio, but the new Facet, designed by Guy Bove, the former Creative Director of TAG Heuer, is its most mature piece to date. That certainly doesn't imply that prior models are in any way pedestrian as a bona fide super compressor diver sits in the mix of an impressive collection. Attention to detail, design sophistication and a new movement do elevate the Facet and show where Circula may be heading in the future. The stainless steel case is fairly compact at 38mm in diameter, fitting in with today's trend of smaller cases, and is primarily made up of angles/facets rather than curves. Starting with the brushed bezel, your eye is drawn to polished facets that cr
